The method consists in that a flat work in an initial position is oriented horizontally between cooled mold beams. Plasma torches are arranged in line across the parallel side edges so that the anode spots of the extreme torches are confined by said edges of the work. By supplying a plasma forming gas and electric current to the plasma torches the work is heated with the formation of a metal pool which extends across the work from edge to edge. By relatively moving the work and the plasma torches in a horizontal plane and along the edges of the work movement of the metal pool over the surface thereof is effected and thereby a remelted layer as thick as the pool is deep, is obtained. The apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a sealed chamber containing a mold having two beams arranged in a horizontal plane and being parallel to one another. Installed in the chamber are plasma torches mounted on shafts and connected through supply lines with the sources of plasma forming gas, electric current and cooling water. Each of the shafts is journalled in a sealing bush installed in the wall of the sealed chamber so that the axis of the shaft is parallel to the beams. Each shaft is rotatively driven by a drive. The apparatus further comprises a drive for relatively moving the work and the shafts in the plane parallel to the beams, connected with at least one of the elements taking part in such movement. The practice of the method with the help of the apparatus of the invention permits a high-quality work of a predetermined macrostructure of a surface layer, to be produced at a higher rate of treatment.

Method of the plasma jet remelting of a surface layer of a flat metal

In a plasma-arc torch for melting metals the electrode assembly comprises an electrode holder made of copper alloys and having a butt portion which rigidly secures a tungsten electrode by means of diffusion welding. The invention provides for a welded joint between the electrode and the electrode holder, a nonconsumable current-conducting interlayer made of titanium, copper and tungsten being placed therebetween.

Electrode assembly for plasma arc torches

According to the invention, there is proposed a feed system for a plasma-arc furnace wherein an electrode with an axial opening is used as the low-temperature plasma generating means. The feed system comprises a gas conduit, in the form of an individual water-cooled member, a current-conducting element mounted within a shell and secured to a flange which includes a duct for the delivery of gas, a duct for feeding flux, and a duct for supplying water. The flange has secured to it the shell. A flux delivery means and a bus for power supply are also included. The herein proposed feed system makes it possible to assure stable operating conditions of a plasma-arc furnace, enhance its efficiency, reduce power losses and decrease expenses involved in the remelting of metals and alloys.

Feed system for plasma-arc furnace

A plasmarc furnace for remelting metals and alloys in a controlled atmosphere, which comprises a hollow consumable electrode disposed in a crystallizer and an arc plasmatron with a nonconsumable electrode disposed above the hollow consumable electrode coaxially therewith. A hollow rod is provided above and coaxial with the arc plasmation driven by a vertical travel mechanism and insulated from the arc plasmatron leads. The plasma-forming gas is delivered to the plasma discharge zone by a plasma-forming gas supply and flow rate control system via a gas conduit defined by the cavities of the hollow rod, the arc plasmatron and the hollow consumable electrode. The crystallizer and hollow rod are coupled to the opposite poles of the power source.

Plasmarc furnace for remelting metals and alloys

A plasma-arc furnace for remelting metals and alloys comprising a chamber with openings, which accommodates therein a plasmatron including a consumable electrode with an axial through-going internal space, and a water-cooled rod of a mechanism for moving this plasmatron in a vertical direction, said electrode and said rod being operatively connected with each other, the rod extending into the chamber through one of its openings. The furnace further includes a flexible gas conduit having one of its end portions projecting outwardly through another opening in said chamber and connected to a source of plasma-yielding gas, the other end of this conduit communicating with the internal axial space of said plasmatron. The furnace also includes a water-cooled crystallizer for accumulating liquid metal therein communicating with the chamber, the water-cooled rod and the water-cooled crystallizer being connected to a power supply source.
