A high strength and low weight hollow fiber membrane tubesheet can be achieved by incorporating with the potting material a loading of a nominally spherical filler. The microsphere filler is preferably nonsmooth, hollow and nonporous and may be treated with a surface modifier agent. Other advantages are also obtained including improved machineability with more open, nonsmeared and nondistorted hollow fibers.

High strength and light tubesheets for hollow fiber membrane permeators

A process is provided for making a water-impermeable, vapor-permeable fabric. A lightweight continuous coating of polypropylene resin is applied to the surface of a fibrous sheet to make the sheet impermeable to water and vapor. Subsequent calendering provides vapor permeability to the sheet while maintaining liquid water impermeability. The resultant product is particularly suited for use as a roofing-tile underlayment or as an air-infiltration barrier.

Vapor-permeable liquid-impermeable fabric

A process is provided for making strong, permeable nonwoven fabrics having an abrasion-resistant burnished surface. The process involves providing a lightly consolidated or weakly bonded web of thermoplastic synthetic organic fibers, needle punching the web, heating a surface of the needled web, and burnishing the heated surface with a rotating, smooth-surfaced metal roll, which preferably simultaneously cools the web surface.
