The present invention relates to devices for closing a passageway in a body, for example a patent foramen ovale (PFO) in a heart, and related methods of using such closure devices for closing the passageway. The method includes introducing a mechanical closure device into an atrium of the heart and transeptally deploying the closure device across the interatrial septum to provide proximation of the septum secundum and septum primum.

Patent foramen ovale closure method

The present invention relates to a delivery system for delivering a device for closing a passageway in a body, for example a patent foramen ovale (PFO) in a heart. The delivery system has an elongate member having a proximal and distal end. A deflectable needle assembly having luminal and abluminal surfaces is slideably engaged within the elongate member. An actuator is slideabley engaged within the elongate member and attached to the needle tip assembly such that translational movement of the actuator causes deflection of the deflectable needle assembly.

Patent foramen ovale closure device with steerable delivery system

A device and method for deploying a mechanical closure device for closing a passageway in a body, for example a patent foramen ovale (PFO) in a heart. The deployment device has a first tubular structure having proximal and distal ends. A second tubular structure is substantially coaxial to and slideably engaged within the first tubular structure. The second tubular structure has a first substantially linear shape when constrained within the first tubular structure, and a second curvilinear shape when telescopically extended from the distal end of the first tubular structure. A third tubular structure is substantially coaxial to and slideably engaged within the second tubular structure. The third tubular structure is configured to provide sufficient rigidity to push the mechanical closure device from the distal end of the second tubular structure, and provide sufficient flexibility to assume a curvilinear shape when deflected by the second tubular structure.

Patent foramen ovale closure device

A device for deploying a mechanical closure device for closing a passageway in a body, for example a patent foramen ovale (PFO) in a heart. The deployment device has a first tubular structure having proximal and distal ends. A second tubular structure is substantially coaxial to and slideably engaged within the first tubular structure. The second tubular structure has a first substantially linear shape when constrained within the first tubular structure, and a second curvilinear shape when telescopically extended from the distal end of the first tubular structure. A third tubular structure is substantially coaxial to and slideably engaged within the second tubular structure. The third tubular structure is configured to provide sufficient rigidity to push the mechanical closure device from the distal end of the second tubular structure, and provide sufficient flexibility to assume a curvilinear shape when deflected by the second tubular structure.

Various surgical assemblies are provided, one embodiment of which includes a substantially flat template having first and second opposed sides, and having a plurality of graduated markings on said first side, and a substantially flat, flexible, surgical implant removably secured to the template and having first and second substantially flat opposed sides, and at least a first trimable portion. The surgical implant is removably coupled to the template so that the first side of the template is substantially adjacent to the first side of the surgical mesh, and so that the plurality of graduated markings are substantially adjacent to the first trimable portion of the surgical implant.

Template for surgical meshes

A urethra support having an elongated mesh tape portion and a mesh extension affixed to the tape portion transverse thereto. In accordance with a method of the invention, the urethra support is inserted into the lower pelvic cavity of a patient with the tape portion forming a sling extending beneath and supporting the urethra of the patient. In this position, the tape portion is generally perpendicular to the urethra. The extension is inserted into the peri-urethral fascia along at least a portion of the length of the urethra. This induces the formation of scar tissue proximate the extension, with the scar tissue eventually contracting thereby compressing the urethra.

Mesh tape with wing-like extensions for treating female urinary incontinence

A method for repairing friable tissue having a defect therein includes providing a looped barbed suture having a plurality of barbs extending outwardly therefrom along at least a portion of a length thereof, and having first and second ends, first and second end portions and a middle portion therebetween. The first and second ends are fixedly coupled to a single needle, and the plurality of barbs extends outwardly away from the needle. The steps further include placing the looped barbed suture around an outer surface of the friable tissue in a spaced apart configuration and so as to extend across the defect, passing the needle through the friable tissue and around the middle portion of the looped barbed suture one or more times at the middle portion, and removing the needle from the looped barbed suture.

Methods for using looped tissue-grasping devices

A system and method for placing surgical implants and having particular application for pelvic floor repair. The system includes an assembly having a guide element with a tissue penetrating tip, a cannula, and a retrieval device having a capture element at its distal end. A channel in the cannula is dimensioned to allow passage therethrough of the guide element, and of the retrieval element when removably coupled with an extension of the surgical implant.

System and method for surgical implant placement

A system for holding surgical fasteners each having a first anchor, a second anchor and a connector extending therebetween upwardly from the first and second anchors, and a method for loading the same into an applicator. The system includes a shuttle having first and second channels dimensioned to slidably receive therein the first and second anchors, and having first and second grooves respectively forming openings into the channels along a portion of a length of the channels. When the first and second anchors are received within the first and second channels, the connector of the surgical fastener extends out of the shuttle through the first and second grooves. The system also includes a cartridge having at least a first channel dimensioned to slidably receive the shuttle therein, and having a first projection extending into the first channel. When the shuttle and loaded fastener are received within the cartridge channel, the connector of the surgical fastener abuts the first projection to thereby limit movement of the fastener toward a distal end of the cartridge.

System for holding surgical fasteners

Described is a surgical instrument and method for treating female urinary stress incontinence. The instrument includes a first curved needle-like element defining in part a curved shaft having a distal end and a proximal, a mesh for implanting into the lower abdomen of a female to provide support to the urethra; a second curved needle element having a proximal end and a distal end, and a coupler for simultaneous attachment to the distal end of the first needle and the distal end of the second needle.

Surgical instrument and method for treating female urinary incontinence

A mesh, a surgical kit including a mesh, and a method for using the same to restore a prolapsed organ within a patient's pelvic cavity are provided. The surgical kit includes a mesh for supporting the organ including a support sheet portion to be positioned beneath the organ, and first and second front attachment strips extending from a proximal region of the mesh and first and second rear attachment strips extending form a distal region of the mesh. The kit also includes a first guide needle for penetrating tissue to create a passageway through which the attachment strips can be pulled, and coupling means for coupling the ends of the mesh to the attachment strips.

Surgical instrument and method for treating organ prolapse conditions

The invention relates to a surgical instrument and a method for treating female urinary incontinence. A tape or mesh is permanently implanted into the body as a support for the urethra. In one embodiment, portions of the tape comprise tissue growth factors and adhesive bonding means for attaching portions of the tape to the pubic bone. In a further embodiment, portions of the tape comprise attachment means for fastening portions of the tape to fascia within the pelvic cavity. In both embodiments the tape is implanted with a single incision through the vaginal wall.

Described is a surgical instrument and method for treating female urinary stress incontinence. The instrument includes a first curved needle-like element defining in part a curved shaft having a distal end and a proximal, a tape, or mesh, for implanting into the lower abdomen of a female to provide support to the urethra; a second curved needle element having a proximal end and a distal end, and a coupler for simultaneous attachment to the distal end of the first needle and the distal end of the second needle. In an alternate embodiment, the second curved needle is an anesthesia needle and the method includes anesthetizing the needle pathway through a patient's body to facilitate the passage of the first needle and mesh therethrough.
