An implant is disclosed which includes an elongated portion constructed in such a manner that the modulus of elasticity varies from one end to another. A plurality of discs alternating between solid discs and mesh discs are stacked with the relationship between the composite thickness of mesh regions as compared to the thickness of solid regions determining the modulus of elasticity at any region thereof. The invention is applicable to all different types of prosthetic implants.

A method for constructing a surgical implant provides a porous layer that is metallurgically bonded to a substrate. An electrode passes current through the porous layer and through the substrate while also controlling the compaction of the porous layer relative to the substrate.

This invention relates generally to the art of orthopaedic prostheses, and more particularly to the type of prosthesis which is adapted to promote the ingrowth of bone and/or tissue into the portion of the prosthesis surface in contact with the bone surface. The prosthesis is comprised of a bottom base layer of porous fiber metal material an intermediate metal reinforcing layer including at least one opening therein and a top non-metal surface which is molded to the base layer. The portion of the polyethylene layer that is in contact with the base layer penetrates into the interstices of the porous metal material, hence securing the non-metal layer to the porous metal base layer.

Prosthetic device adapted to promote bone/tissue ingrowth

A medical body implant element that is intended to experience rolling or sliding pressure during its function in the human body comprises microparticles of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene which are fused together into a matrix. A quantity of graphitic carbon fibers of short, random lengths is disposed in intersticies of the matrix. The resultant composite is wear-resistant and substantially isotropic.
