A water separation system and method for treating multiphase hydrocarbon production streams is disclosed. The system may be employed to separate gas from the production stream, and then separate the liquid stream into its oil component and water component. A gas/liquid separator may be employed to separate a multiphase hydrocarbon production stream into a gas stream and a liquid stream. A liquid cyclone separator, positioned downstream from the gas/liquid separator, may be employed to divide the liquid stream into an oil dominated portion and a water dominated portion. The system may be used on land or on offshore platforms in locations where it is desirable to separate oil and water from hydrocarbon streams.

Water separation systems and methods

A riser-based slug control system and a method of controlling slugging in a fluid flowing through a riser are provided. The system includes a gas-liquid separation separator that has a housing defining an internal volume. An inclined inlet is connected to the housing and configured to receive a flow of multiphase fluid and direct the flow of fluid into the housing so that the fluid flows spirally in the volume and separates, with gas from the fluid collecting in an upper portion of the volume and liquid from the fluid collecting in a lower portion of the volume. A tubular passage, which extends at least partially through the internal volume of the housing, defines a plurality of orifices. The tubular passage is configured to receive liquid from the lower portion of the volume and gas from upper portion of the volume, and deliver the mixture of the combined liquid and gas through an outlet.

System and method for slug control

A flow conditioning apparatus, a separation system which includes the flow conditioning apparatus and cooperating downstream separation equipment, and a method of using the system are described. The system separates liquid components of differing densities from a fluid mixture. The flow conditioning apparatus includes an inlet, an outlet, and a swirl chamber extending along a swirl axis. The inlet and outlet cooperate with the swirl chamber to create a swirling of a fluid mixture passing through the swirl chamber to ideally induce coalescence of liquid droplets. The inlet and the outlet typically direct fluid to flow in a circumferential direction relative to the swirl axis to create a helical flow. The flow of the fluid mixture through the apparatus encounters a minimum of fluid shear and associated droplet dispersion. The enhanced quantity of droplets coalesced, or at least the quantity of pre-existing droplets entering the control apparatus which are not substantially dispersed by fluid shear, increases the efficiency of liquid separation by the cooperating downstream separation equipment.
