A query results preview generation method and system that receives a preliminary query while a query for a search is being constructed, determines a distribution of result items that would be retrieved if the search were executed using the preliminary query, among a new result category including new result items and a previous result category including result items previously retrieved in a session, generates the query results preview using the distribution of result items that would be retrieved if the search were executed using the preliminary query, and provides the query results preview while the query for the search is being constructed and prior to execution of the search using the query.

Method and system for generating interactive query results previews

A system is provided that coordinates the operation of hardware devices and software applications in support of specific tasks such as holding a meeting. The system includes one or more computers connected by a network, at least one configuration repository component, at least one room control component, and one or more devices and applications for each room control component. Meeting presenters can configure a meeting, or they may use a default configuration. A meeting includes one or more presenters' configurations of devices and applications to accommodate multiple presenters simultaneously. The meeting configurations are stored by the configuration repository component. Each presenter's configuration comprises a subset of the one or more devices and applications. The operation of devices and applications in the meeting is coordinated by the room control component based on the presenters' configurations for the meeting.

A system and method for determining a presence state of a person. A plurality of data feeds is received. A subset of the plurality of data feeds that includes data regarding presence states of a first person is identified. Systems and methods for facilitating use of non-electronic whiteboards and other large displays. Images of whiteboard are input to a computer device to provide automatic detection of a collaborative portion of content on the board created during a collaborative session and distribution to relevant collaborators alone while personal content of board is not distributed. Modification history of writings are preserved and displayed as change histograms to assist a user locate content that may have been erased. User finds the content by inspecting regions of board that correspond to user's memory of approximate location and time of modifying the content and are shown on the histogram as having been modified. Persistent reminder notes that clutter board space are detected and stored based on their location on the board and duration of persisting on the board so that they may be erased.

System and method for facilitating the use of whiteboards

The image analysis system includes a processor and memory and displays an image to a first user. The image analysis system tracks gaze of the first user and collects initial gaze data for the first user. The initial gaze data includes a plurality of gaze points. The image analysis system identifies one or more ignored regions of the image based on a distribution of the gaze data within the image; and displays at least a first subset of the image. The first subset of the image is selected so as to include a respective ignored region of the one or more ignored regions and the first subset of the image is displayed in a manner that draws attention to the respective ignored region. In some embodiments, the ignored region is visually emphasized within the image. In some embodiments, only the first subset of the image is displayed.

System and method for improved image analysis through gaze data feedback

Speculative query expansion is a way to increase the effectiveness of relevance feedback. Instead of picking the best expansion query beforehand, multiple queries are executed and the best expansion query is selected afterward, but with no additional effort (or information) required from the user. From the best expansion query, search results and expanded queries more pertinent to the user can therefore be provided.

A method is described for modifying behavior for social appropriateness in computer mediated communications. Data can be obtained representing the natural non-verbal behavior of a video conference participant. The cultural appropriateness of the behavior is calculated based on a cultural model and previous behavior of the session. Upon detecting that the behavior of the user is culturally inappropriate, the system can calculate an alternative behavior based on the cultural model. Based on this alternative behavior, the video output stream can be modified to be more appropriate by altering gaze and gesture of the conference participants. The output stream can be modified by using previously recorded images of the participant, by digitally synthesizing a virtual avatar display or by switching the view displayed to the remote participant. Once the user's behavior changes to be once again culturally appropriate, the modified video stream can be returned to unmodified state.

Method and system for modifying non-verbal behavior for social appropriateness in video conferencing and other computer mediated communications

A system provides for controlling a cursor on a screen automatically and dynamically when using a video camera as a pointing device. A computer displays static or dynamic content to a screen. A video camera connected to the computer points at the screen. As the video camera films the screen, frames captured by the video camera are sent to the computer. A target image is displayed by the computer onto the screen and marks the position of the screen cursor of the video camera. Frames captured by the video camera include the target image, and the computer dynamically moves the target image on the screen to ensure that the target image stays in the center of the view of the video camera.

Blogs (and other information sources) are recommended to a user based history of user's online activities. The system: (1) processes the user's web history, (2) identifies blog posts (and web pages) that link to pages read by the user, (3) generates multiple relevance scores for each identified post/page, and (4) produces multiple rankings of the corresponding source blogs (and web sites) by aggregating individual relevance scores (or combinations of relevance scores), according to users' preferences. The system allows the discovery of information sources that are likely to be interesting to the user and allows sources lost in the 'long tail' to be seamlessly discovered.

System and method for recommending information resources to user based on history of user's online activity

Embodiments of the present invention combine the flexibility of the computer in segmenting, indexing, and retrieving data with the strengths of people in analyzing scenes. They provide a mechanism that allows a group of analyzers at distributed locations to collaborate in generating pieces of semantic information of a data stream, integrates these pieces into a summary representation that can be used for subsequent computation, and allows related hypotheses and information requests to be presented back to the analyzers. Described system makes it possible to charge copy fees related to the amount of copyrighted material being copied and to provide those fees to the appropriate copyright holder. The scanned information is passed through an OCR filter that produces a stream of text, which is then passed to a full-text search service that identifies matching passages in its index. Sufficiently long passages found in the copied document that match previously indexed documents held by the service constitute copyrighted materials. In addition, the scanned image may be processed to identify instances of copyrighted images present in the scan.

Described is a component-based control system involving the interface and middleware layers for collaborative exploratory search. The components include modules for multi-user input and display capabilities, and are individually configurable to allow simultaneous manipulation of multiple search parameters and algorithms. In a collaborative exploratory search, a team of people with a shared information need engage in exploratory search together. This search happens synchronously, leveraging realtime feedback in the search loop. The search team works together, finding patterns and information that each player individually might not have found, and doing so more efficiently than any single person could have. Each team member brings their own expertise and point of view to a shared problem. Distributing tasks and roles among team members leverages individual expertise and creates efficiencies of scale. Supporting the different roles and tasks involves resolving complexities in control and display; a regulatory component performs this task.
