An apparatus comprising a fuel pump, an internal combustion engine having an oil pressure and including an engine block and a crankshaft rotatably supported by the engine block, the apparatus further comprising structure for providing a first electrical signal while the engine is running, a starter selectively operable to rotate the crankshaft, structure for providing a second electrical signal while the starter rotates the crankshaft, and structure for causing the fuel pump to supply fuel to the internal combustion engine only while at least one of the first and second signals is present and without regard to the oil pressure of the internal combustion engine.

A device for draining carburetors which do not have a float chamber drain. The device is a screw which has an internal passageway. The internal passageway has a longitudinal passageway beginning at the head of the screw and a transverse passageway which communicates with the float chamber and intersects the longitudinal passageway. A drain plug is threaded into the longitudinal passageway near the head of the screw.

An internal combustion engine comprising a crankcase adapted to rotatably support a crankshaft having an axis, the crankcase defining a plurality of crankcase chambers and including a generally flat manifold mounting surface including therein a first series of inlet openings aligned in the direction of the crankshaft axis, and a second series of inlet openings aligned in the direction of the crankshaft axis, the first and second series being laterally offset with respect to the direction of the crankshaft axis, and each of the inlet openings of the first and second series being respectively adapted to feed air to one of the crankcase chambers and having a minor dimension parallel to the crankshaft axis, a major dimension transverse to the crankshaft axis, and a portion overlapping the inlet openings of the other of the first and second series.

Disclosed is an engine fuel flow restriction warning system comprising an engine including a first conduit means connecting a fuel storage means and a fuel pumping means. A second conduit means connects a fuel pumping means with an engine fuel inlet means. Pressure sensing means communicates with the first conduit means, and the pressure sensing means operates a warning means to produce a warning when the pressure in the first conduit means reaches a predetermined low level. When used with an engine including a cooling system and a cooling system temperature sensing means communicating with the engine cooling system, the temperature sensing means operates the same pressure warning means to produce a warning when the temperature in the engine cooling system reaches a predetermined level.

A fuel feed system for supplying fuel to a combustion chamber of a first internal combustion engine and to a combustion chamber of a second internal combustion engine. The fuel feed system includes a fuel tank, and a first fuel pump including an outlet, and an inlet communicating with the fuel tank. The system also includes a fuel vapor separator including a first outlet, a second outlet, and an inlet communicating with the first fuel pump outlet, a second fuel pump communicating with the fuel vapor separator first outlet and communicating with the first engine combustion chamber, and a third fuel pump communicating with the fuel vapor separator second outlet and communicating with the second engine combustion chamber.

An engine comprises a combustion chamber and a fuel transfer passage having a fuel outlet port communicating with the combustion chamber. A primary fuel delivery system communicates with the combustion chamber and introduces fuel from the fuel source into the combustion chamber. The engine further comprises a fuel pump which is adapted to be connected with a source of fuel and a fuel return line having a first end communicating with the source. A mechanism selectively controls the communication of the fuel pump with either the fuel return line or the fuel transfer passage, so that an enriched flow of fuel can be selectively supplied to the combustion chamber prior to and after starting.

A manual starter is provided for an internal combustion engine including a drive member mounted for rotation and operable to start the engine when rotated. The starter includes a flexible pull element mounted for movement between a normally retracted position and an extended position, a mechanism for drivingly engaging the drive member when the flexible pull element is pulled to the extended position, and a retracting mechanism for returning the pull element from the extended position to the retracted position. The starter also includes a guide roller mounted for rotation and in frictional contact with the flexible pull element, and a mechanism responsive to rotation of the guide roller for retarding ignition spark timing as the flexible pull element moves toward the extended position, and for not retarding ignition spark timing as the flexible pull element moves toward the retracted position..

The internal combustion engine includes a carburetor having an air induction passage communicating with the engine combustion chamber and a throttle valve mounted inside the induction passage for pivotal movement between an idling speed position and a range of high speed positions, a primary fuel delivery system including a fuel pump for supplying fuel to the carburetor during normal engine operation, and a secondary fuel delivery system for supplying a flow of enrichment fuel to the engine combustion chamber, independently of the primary fuel delivery system, during periods of rapid engine deceleration. The secondary fuel delivery system includes conduit means communicating with the fuel pump and with the combustion chamber at a point downstream of the throttle valve, a solenoid-actuated valve movable between a normally closed position and an open position to respectively prevent and permit delivery of fuel through the conduit means from the fuel pump into the combustion chamber and a pressure-sensing switch assembly connected in communication with a low pressure zone in the induction passage downstream of the throttle wherein sub-atmospheric pressure is created by reciprocation of the engine piston. This switch assembly is operable to selectively energize the solenoid-actuated valve to the open position when the pressure in the low pressure zone is below a predetermined level. The secondary fuel delivery system preferably is arranged to also serve as a priming fuel system.
