A light emitting photonic crystal having an organic light emitting diode and methods of making the same are disclosed. An organic light emitting diode disposed within a photonic structure having a band-gap, or stop-band, allows the photonic structure to emit light at wavelengths occurring at the edges of the band-gap. Photonic crystal structures that provide this function may include materials having a refractive index that varies.

Band edge emission enhanced organic light emitting diode with a localized emitter

Light emitting photonic crystals that comprise organic light emitting diodes and that are capable of emitting multiple wavelengths of light simultaneously and methods for fabricating the same are disclosed. Disclosed light emitting photonic crystals emit light at wavelengths at the two edges of a stop-band. Methods for adjusting the width of stop-bands of disclosed devices are also disclosed.

Band edge emission enhanced organic light emitting diode-based devices that emit multiple light wavelengths

Disclosed herein is a light emitting device and method of manufacturing such a device comprised of a series of photopolymerizable, chiral liquid crystalline layers that can be solvent cast on a substrate. The mixture of chiral materials in each successive layer may be blended in such a way that each layer has the same chiral pitch. Further the chiral materials in each layer may also be blended so that the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices in each layer match the other layers such that the complete assembly of layers will optically function as a single relatively thick layer of chiral liquid crystal. The chiral nematic material in each layer can spontaneously adopt a helical structure with a helical pitch. The light emitting layers of the light emitting device can further comprise electroluminescent material that emits light into the band edge light propagation modes of the photonic crystal.

Band edge emission enhanced organic light emitting diode utilizing chiral liquid crystalline emitter

Light emitting electrochemical cell devices comprising chiral liquid crystalline materials. The chiral liquid crystalline material mixtures of the devices function as both electrolytes and as light emitting materials. The chiral liquid crystalline material mixtures also form photonic crystal structures creating a photonic stop band. The presence of the photonic stop band enables the light emitting electrochemical cell devices to emit light with improved energy efficiency.

Circularly polarized light emitting organic light emitting diodes

Disclosed herein are head-mounted and other display assemblies that utilize organic light emitting diodes as image sources. In the organic light emitting diodes utilized in these display assemblies light is emitted by stimulated emission. As a result of this, the organic light emitting diodes utilized emit light vertically within a narrow cone about axes normal to the planes of the organic light emitting diodes. This narrow cone of emission results in greatly reduced light insertion losses when light transits from the organic light emitting diodes through the display assemblies and as a result increased energy efficiency in the operation of the display assemblies.

Photonic crystal structures that provide this function may include materials having a refractive index that varies periodically such as distributed Bragg reflectors, aligned nematic liquid crystals, and holographically recorded gratings.

Active matrix enhanced organic light emitting diode displays for large screen graphic display applications

Display devices using feedback-enhanced light emitting diodes are disclosed. The display devices include but are not limited to active and passive matrix displays and projection displays. A light emissive element disposed between feedback elements is used as light emitting element in the display devices. The light emissive element may include organic or non-organic material. The feedback elements coupled to an emissive element allow the emissive element to emit collimated light by stimulated emission. In one aspect, feedback elements that provide this function include, but are not limited to, holographic reflectors with refractive index variations that are continuous.

A luminaire. The luminaire includes a geometric solid. The geometric solid has a length and includes a first geometric solid portion which includes an optically clear material and a second geometric solid portion which includes the optically clear material, wherein the first and second geometric solid portions are conjoined. The luminaire further includes a cavity defined by the first and second geometric solid portions, a plurality of discrete light sources positioned to emit light into the cavity, a first aperture positioned to allow a first portion of light in the cavity to pass into the first geometric solid portion, and a second aperture positioned to allow a second portion of the light in the cavity to pass into the second geometric solid portion.
