A magnetic head positioning apparatus including a chassis, a driving device provided on the chassis, a guide member provided on the chassis, a carrier movably provided on the guide member, a first metallic head support mounted on the carrier and adapted to support a first magnetic head, and a second metallic head support mounted on the carrier and adapted to support a second magnetic head which is disposed to oppose the first magnetic head. A coupling member is formed on the first head support and directly connected to the driving device. By moving the coupling member by the operation of the driving device, the carrier is moved along the guide member through the first head support. Thus, it is possible for the magnetic head positioning apparatus to possess excellent resistance to environmental changes and to effect highly accurate positioning of the magnetic heads.

A mechanism for supporting magnetic heads has gimbal plates which support both magnetic heads in such a manner than the magnetic heads oppose to each other across a flexible double-sided magnetic disk. The magnetic heads are resiliently pressed onto the magnetic disk through movable members which are resiliently biased.

A magnetic head has a slider and a recording and reproducing gap which slide-contact a magnetic disk and is pivotally supported. The recording and reproducing gap of the magnetic head is disposed so as to be offset toward the forward end of the slider in terms of the direction of rotation of the magnetic disk, whereby it is possible to obtain a stable state of contact between the recording and reproducing gap and the magnetic disk.

A magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus includes a support assembly and a plurality of magnetic heads supported by the support assembly for recording audio information signals on and reproducing previously recorded audio information signals from a magnetic disc. The magnetic heads are positioned relative to the magnetic disc by a magnetic head moving arrangement which is coupled to engage the disc so as to automatically eject the disc from the magnetic heads.

A magnetic head mounting device of a magnetic recording apparatus including a carriage, a first magnetic head supported by the carriage, a head arm supported by the carriage for movement in a vertical direction, and a second magnetic head supported by the head arm and disposed in spaced juxtaposed relation to the first magnetic head, wherein both or one of the first magnetic head and second magnetic head is mounted on the carriage or head arm through a gimbal. The gimbal includes a head mounting section for mounting the first magnetic head or second magnetic head thereto, and a supported section disposed outwardly of the head mounting section and partly supported by projections located at the carriage or head arm, the head mounting section and supported section being partly connected together through a plurality of connections. The gimbal is mounted to one or both of the head arm and carriage in such a manner that the head mounting section and supported section are connected together in a direction which is parallel to the direction of sliding movement of the carriage.
