Techniques are described for managing network devices by defining a service chain that includes a plurality of network devices, such that the service chain identifies a position of each network device with respect to other network devices. The techniques further detect a new network device becoming active on a network and identify a logical model associated with the new network device. The new network device is programmed based on the service chain and other devices already active in the service chain.

Network device management

This disclosure describes techniques for applying a policy proximate to a source of data traffic in a network. The techniques include indicating to a destination edge node that a policy relevant to the data traffic has not been applied at a source edge node. The destination edge node may send the policy to the source edge node. The source edge node may apply the policy to a subsequent packet of the data traffic. Application of the policy proximate to the source of the data traffic may conserve network resources and improve performance of the network.

Policy application

Techniques for utilizing virtual edge switches of cloud computing networks to send, receive, and store in respective virtual memory, associations between virtual resource and virtual edge switches for better convergence in virtual application centric infrastructure networks. Each virtual memory acts as a virtual endpoint database and contains a number of records indicating associations between each virtual endpoint and the virtual edge switch attached to the virtual endpoint. Each virtual edge switch is hosted by a physical server and is configured to forward communications received from separate physical servers in the cloud computing network to the virtual endpoints attached to the virtual edge switch. The advertisement messages are configured to be sent upon a new virtual resource or a migrated virtual resource spinning-up on a physical server. The advertisement message may be configured to store additional network routing information associated with the virtual machine hosting the virtual endpoint.

Communication of endpoint information among virtual switches

Aspects of the embodiments include receiving a packet at a network element of a packet-switched network; identifying a presence of a shared service destination address in a header of the packet; identifying a shared service destination address for the packet based, at least in part, on a destination internet protocol (IP) address stored in a forward information base; and forwarding the packet to the shared service destination address.
