In one aspect, the present disclosure relates to a communications system which, in one embodiment, includes a phase-correlated, orthogonally-polarized, light-stream generator (POLG) for preparing light into phase coherent light streams having defined states of polarization and spectral composition. In one embodiment, the POLG includes a light source configured to emit light having a predetermined wavelength and a polarization apparatus configured to prepare light from the light source into particular states of polarization. The POLG also includes a phase modulator configured to produce light having a plurality of wavelengths and configured to retard the phase of propagation of light with a first state of linear polarization while not retarding the phase of light with a state of linear polarization orthogonal to the first state of linear polarization when an external electric field is applied. The POLG also includes an electrical oscillator configured to periodically apply an electric field to the phase modulator.

Certain implementations of the disclosed technology may include systems, methods, and apparatus for carrier-embedded optical radio-over-fiber (RoF) communications. Example embodiments of the method may include modulating a baseband signal with and an intermediate frequency (IF) and a radio frequency (RF) carrier signal to produce a RF modulated optical signal, transmitting the RF modulated optical signal to a remote access point with an optical fiber, and detecting the transmitted RF modulated optical signal. The method may also include receiving a RF uplink signal and mixing a harmonic of the RF carrier signal with the received RF uplink signal to down-convert the received RF uplink signal to an IF uplink signal. The method may include modulating a second optical source with the IF uplink signal to produce an IF uplink optical signal, transmitting the IF uplink optical signal via an optical fiber, and detecting the IF uplink optical signal.

Carrier embedded optical radio-signal modulation of heterodyne optical carrier suppression

An optical signaling header technique applicable to optical networks wherein packet routing information is embedded in the same channel or wavelength as the data payload so that both the header and data payload propagate through network elements with the same path and the associated delays. The technique effects survivability and security of the optical networks by encompassing conventional electronic security with an optical security layer by generating replicated versions of the input data payload at the input node, and the transmission of each of the replicated versions over a corresponding one of the plurality of links. Moreover, each of the links is composed of multiple wavelengths to propagate optical signals or optical packets, and each of the replicated versions of the data payload may be propagated over a selected one of the wavelengths in each corresponding one of the plurality of links.

An edge viewing semiconductor photodetector may be provided. Light may be transmitted through an optical fiber conduit comprising a core region surrounded by a cladding region. The light may be received at the edge viewing semiconductor photodetector having an active area. The active area may be substantially contained within a first plane. The edge viewing semiconductor photodetector may further have conducting contact pads connected to the active area. The contact pads may be substantially contained within plural planes. The first plane may have its normal direction substantially inclined with respect to a normal direction of the plural planes. The first plane may further have its normal direction substantially inclined with respect to a direction of the received light incident to the active area. Next, a signal may be received from the pads. The signal may correspond to the transmitted light.
