A labeling machine applies an adhesive to labels for attachment to containers and has a glue bar which engages a glue roller. A label drum receives and delivers labels into engagement with containers for wrap around labeling of the containers. An adhesive is delivered to the glue bar. The adhesive is a hot melt adhesive which can maintain its label bond while withstanding high heat such as from a pasteurization process. The hot melt adhesive has a viscosity which tends to increase if the adhesive is not kept in constant motion or is allowed to set. The shear of the adhesive is increased during adhesive transfer to ensure low viscosity transfer of the adhesive from the glue roller to a label positioned on the label drum.

Method and apparatus for labeling containers with increased vacuum draw

A method and apparatus of labeling cylindrical articles feeds labels onto a label drum. The labels have a formed curl such that the leading edge tends to curl away from the surface of the label drum. The article is fed onto the label drum and wrapped by engaging the article with the leading edge of the label and then wrapping the article. An uncut label web can be fed over an edge to impart the desired curl to the label web. The label web is then cut into labels, which are fed onto the label drum. Also, the tension of the label over the edge can be varied so as to vary the amount of curl imparted to the label.

An apparatus is disclosed for controlling the motion of a machine system so as to cut individual lengths from a web having graphics on predetermined web positions and which allows the use of an inexpensive AC induction motor. An AC induction motor has an output power shaft for imparting the motive force necessary to drive the machine system, such as a web feeding system. A sensor is operatively coupled to the AC motor for determining the position of the motor during system operation. A controller is operatively connected to the sensor and motor and forms a closed loop control circuit. The controller changes the feedback loop characteristics of the closed loop control circuit during a stop, hold or start condition of the motor. By adding an externally generated compensating signal to the input of the feedback loop, the controller also minimizes acceleration error. The controller also limits the value of a signal reaching the feedback loop of the control circuit to a given maximum value so as to eliminate any over-reaction of the system, while allowing a signal having less than a given threshold value to proceed unaffected to the feedback loop.

Registration system for web feeding

A labeling machine can rapidly change the size of labels cut from a web of labels to match different diameter containers which are then fed onto containers moving along a conveyor. A labeling drum is positioned adjacent to the conveyor for receiving cut labels and applying them onto containers fed along the conveyor. A cutter assembly is positioned adjacent to the labeling drum for receiving a web of labels, cutting the web, and transferring a cut label onto the labeling drum. The cutter assembly includes a stationary mounting plate and a drive pinion mounted on the plate. A cutter roll frame is received on the mounting plate, and includes a vertically oriented cutter roll with upper and lower ends, a central axis, and a gear at the lower end for meshing with the drive pinion and rotating the cutter roll. The cutter roll gear size is directly proportional to the size of the cutter roll. The central axis of the cutter roll is spaced farther from the drive pinion, and the outer surface of the cutter roll is spaced farther from the label drum for successive larger diameter cutter rolls.

A method and apparatus for labeling containers allows labeling of containers by wrap around labeling without applying an adhesive on the leading edge of the label. Labels are held on a label drum and moved into a label applying position while containers are fed into the label applying position. Air is blown from a first position on the label drum onto the leading edge of the label at an angle to the label drum surface and in a direction backward along the label from the leading edge to force the leading edge of the label against the container, while also minimizing the laminar flow of air under the label. After the leading edge of the label has engaged the container, air is blown from a second position on the label drum spaced from the first position onto the label and container at an angle to the label drum surface to maintain a laminar flow of air over the label and maintain the label tight against the container during container rotation. The leading edge is maintained on the container by wet adhesion or by air which is blown onto the label and container from first and second angled positions on the side opposite the label drum. Air can also be blown from a third position on the label drum spaced from the first and second positions onto the leading edge of the label after the container has rotated almost 360 degrees to maintain the label tight against the container during the final part of the wrapping process.

A roll-fed labelling machine that can be quickly changed to process containers and labels of different sizes does not require changed cutters to match different label sizes by engaging at least 50% of each label on the vacuum drum before it is cut from the web. Infeed guides and roll-on-pad assemblies, specific to individual container sizes can be installed swiftly by means of fixed alignment pins. The starwheel, having a diameter that is only five times the diameter of the mid-size container that the labelling machine is designed to process reduces abrasion and vibration. Starwheels that are aligned and with preset timing adjustment integral with the starwheel members for each container size are changed quickly to synchronize starwheel timing with that of the labelling machine. A glue applicator has a heater cartridge in the glue bar for warming the glue to a suitable range, while the glue roller has a circumference of not more than nine inches to control thermal losses and to reduce glue 'slinging' and glue 'stringing.'

An apparatus for splicing the leading label in a roll of labels to one of the last labels in a second roll. The second roll, depleted because the labels are applied to articles in an assembly line, has photosensitive device that registers this depletion as the second roll is consumed. The device initiates splicing the leading label to a label in the depleted roll. A controller also responds to the device by moving the dancer arm to a predetermined position in order to control the registration of the leading label with the last labels in the second roll. The controller also responds to a count of the labels that are in the web between the production line and the splice in order to identify the article to which the splice has been applied to eject that article from the production line.

An apparatus and method for applying a heat shrinkable film to a container having a right-circular, cylindrical sidewall section and at least one inwardly directed end section. A film segment is transported by a rotary vacuum drum past an adhesive station, where adhesive is applied to leading and trailing ends of the film. Then, the film is wrapped completely around the container by the co-operative action of a vacuum drum and an arcuate roll-on pad, leaving a free-standing portion of the label extending past the sidewall section. In the overlapping ends of the film, a first seam is formed by compressive forces between the vacuum drum and the container sidewall. A second seam is simultaneously formed by the compressive force of an active label deflector on the vacuum drum, adapted to press the free-standing portion of the label ends against the end section of the container. Heat is then applied to the label, shrinking the free-standing portion upon the container's end section.

Apparatus and method for applying a label to a container

An apparatus and method for controlling the tension and stopping action of web material fed from a supply roll is disclosed. A supply roll of web material is supported on a support assembly. A brake is operatively connected to the support assembly for applying a braking force onto the support assembly to apply tension onto the withdrawn web material. The diameter of the supply roll is sensed and a signal is generated to the power supply of a brake proportional to the diameter of the supply roll to vary the applied braking force and maintain a constant tension on the web material during its withdrawal. A stopping signal is generated to the brake power supply during stopping operation of film withdrawal to increase the braking force supplied to the support assembly. The stopping signal is an additive combination of a first signal that is essentially proportional to the diameter of the supply roll and a second signal that is essentially constant.

Apparatus and method for controlling tension and stopping action of web

A method and apparatus for orienting rotationally symmetrical articles and containers having an orientation reference index thereon. An infeed mechanism successively delivers containers to a rotary starwheel, preferably having a plurality of container pockets spaced about its periphery. An arcuate guide is concentric with and spaced radially outwardly from the periphery of the starwheel. A mechanism is provided within each pocket to maintain the entering containers initially in a radially extended position, in rolling engagement with the arcuate guide. A detector senses the index on the rotating container, and sends a pulse to delay circuitry. Depending upon a number of operational parameters, including overall speed of the orienter, the viscosity of the product within the containers, and whether the containers are full of product or not, the control pulse is accordingly delayed. The delayed control pulse then deactivates the mechanism, radially withdrawing the container farther into the pocket against a brake shoe. The oriented containers are subsequently labelled, packaged, or otherwise processed.
