A gap sub assembly for electromagnetic telemetry used in downhole drilling. The gap sub comprises a female part comprising a female mating section and a male part comprising a male mating section. The male mating section is matingly received within the female mating section and electrically isolated therefrom. One or more electrically insulating bodies secure the male part axially and torsionally relative to the female part. The electrically insulating bodies also electrically isolate the male part from the female part. The electrically insulating bodies can be installed through apertures in the female part or at least some of the electrically insulating bodies can be installed before the male mating section is inserted into the female mating section. The electrically insulating bodies can be held in place on the male mating section using a retention apparatus such as a ring, a scarf, pods or an adhesive.

Torsion resistant gap sub

One or more seals may be provided in a gap sub to prevent the ingress of drilling fluid into an insulating gap between a male member of the gap sub and a female member of the gap sub. A first seal may comprise an internal gap sub seal provided near the tip of the male member of the gap sub. A second seal may comprise an external gap sub seal provided near the tip of the female member of the gap sub. The first and second seals may comprise non-conductive materials. The first and second seals may each comprise one or more O-rings. The first and second seals may comprise one or more lips, protrusions or flanges to engage the male and/or female members of the gap sub for maintaining contact with the male and/or female members during deformation of the gap sub.

Sealed gap sub

Connectors and connection systems for connecting two tubing sections together are provided. The connectors can include: a first end having an outer surface and adapted for insertion into an end of the tubing section and a second end adapted for connection to a second connector. The connector can have an attachment block in one aspect with a first threaded aperture and a second threaded aperture passing through it so that axial screws and radial screws can secure the connector to the end of a tubing section before it is connected to another connector. In another aspect, the connector can have an attachment slot provided in an outer surface of the first end of the connector sized to fit a retaining clips so that axial screws can secure the connector to an end of a tubing section before the connector is connected to another connector.

Preloadable connectors for tubing

A fluid pressure pulse generator apparatus for a telemetry tool comprising a stator and a rotor. The stator comprises a stator body and a plurality of radially extending stator projections spaced around the stator body and the spaced stator projections define stator flow channels extending therebetween. The rotor comprises a rotor body and a plurality of radially extending rotor projections spaced around the rotor body. The rotor projections are axially adjacent the stator projections and the rotor is rotatable relative to the stator such that the rotor projections move in and out of fluid communication with the stator flow channels to create fluid pressure pulses in fluid flowing through the stator flow channels. At least one of the rotor projections and at least one of the stator projections has a standard outer diameter. At least one of the rotor projections and/or at least one of the stator projections has a reduced outer diameter. The reduced outer diameter rotor and/or stator projections provide bypass channels for flow of fluid and allow for generation of a pattern of different fluid pressure pulses.

Fluid pressure pulse generator for a telemetry tool

A pressure compensation device for a downhole fluid pressure pulse generator comprising: a membrane sleeve; a membrane support with a bore for receiving a drive-shaft, a central section which receives the membrane sleeve, a male mating section on each side, each having a groove extending around an external surface and at least one opening aligned with the groove; a pair of female mating components with a bore and a channel in an internal surface, each female mating component configured to mate with one of the male mating sections to axially clamp the membrane sleeve between the membrane support and the female mating components; and a pair of retaining rings each received between the male mating section groove and the female mating component channel, where the retaining rings are accessible through the opening in the male mating section and radially expandable into a space in the female mating component to unseat the retaining ring from the groove for removal.

Pressure compensation device for a fluid pressure pulse generating apparatus

A fluid pressure pulse generator for a downhole telemetry tool comprising a stator and a rotor. The stator comprises a stator flow diverter radially extending across a flow path for fluid flowing through the fluid pressure pulse generator and having one or more than one stator flow channel therethrough through which the fluid flows. The rotor comprises a rotor flow diverter radially extending across the flow path for fluid flowing through the fluid pressure pulse generator and having one or more than one rotor flow channel therethrough through which the fluid flows. The rotor flow diverter is axially adjacent the stator flow diverter and the rotor flow diverter is rotatable relative to the stator flow diverter to move the one or more than one rotor flow channel in and out of fluid communication with the one or more than one stator flow channel to create fluid pressure pulses in the fluid flowing through the fluid pressure pulse generator. A rotor/driveshaft coupling releasably couples the driveshaft of a probe of the tool and the rotor such that the probe can be decoupled from the rotor and removed from a sub housing the fluid pressure pulse generator.

Fluid pressure pulse generator for a downhole telemetry tool

A seal and seal assembly for a fluid pressure pulse generating tool. The seal comprises an annular seal section comprising an internal sealing surface and an external sealing surface; and an annular heel section. The seal assembly comprises a seal assembly housing with a longitudinally extending bore therethrough for receiving a driveshaft of the tool and the seal enclosed by the seal assembly housing and configured to surround a portion of the driveshaft. The internal sealing surface of the seal is configured to be in sealing contact with the driveshaft and the external sealing surface of the seal is configured to be in sealing contact with an internal surface of the seal assembly housing. The annular heel section of the seal is configured to provide an interference fit with the driveshaft or with the internal surface of the seal assembly housing.

Seal and seal assembly for a fluid pressure pulse generating tool

A fluid pressure pulse generator for a telemetry tool comprising a stator and a rotor. The stator comprising a stator body and a plurality of radially extending stator projections spaced around the stator body, whereby adjacently spaced stator projections define stator flow channels extending therebetween. The rotor comprising a rotor body and a plurality of radially extending rotor projections spaced around the rotor body. The rotor projections are axially adjacent the stator projections and the rotor is rotatable relative to the stator such that the rotor projections move in and out of fluid communication with the stator flow channels to generate fluid pressure pulses in fluid flowing through the stator flow channels. At least one of the rotor projections has an angled rotor bypass channel which moves in and out of fluid communication with the stator flow channels as the rotor rotates relative to the stator, the angled rotor bypass channel extending through or along a surface of the at least one rotor projection and having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet downhole and lateral relative to the fluid inlet. The angled rotor bypass channel providing a self-correction mechanism causing the rotor to rotate to an open flow position when there is failure of the telemetry tool.

Fluid pressure pulse generator and flow bypass sleeve for a telemetry tool

A method for selecting a drilling fluid pressure pulse transmission frequency in a downhole telemetry tool comprises: emitting a frequency sweep wave in a drilling fluid that comprises pressure pulses over a range of frequencies and over a period of time; measuring a pressure of the drilling fluid at the telemetry tool while the frequency sweep wave is being emitted; determining a signal strength at each frequency in the range of frequencies from the measured pressure of the drilling fluid; and selecting at least one frequency in the range of frequencies that meets a selected signal strength threshold as a telemetry signal transmission frequency for the telemetry tool. The method can further comprise encoding the at least one selected frequency in a header message and transmitting the header message to surface using pressure pulse telemetry, and then encoding telemetry data into a pressure pulse telemetry signal and transmitting the pressure pulse telemetry signal to surface at the at least one selected frequency.

Downhole telemetry tool with adaptive frequency transmitter

A method for sealing a gap sub wherein injected material is used to secure a seal member in a gap. The seal member is positioned in the gap, and the material is then injected into the gap and against the seal member, seating the seal member and securing it in place once the material solidifies. The injected material is preferably electrically non-conductive.

Method for sealing a gap sub assembly

A telemetry tool comprising a pulser assembly, a primary seal, a fluid pressure pulse generator and a secondary seal. The pulser assembly comprises a housing and a driveshaft extending out of an opening in the housing. The primary seal surrounds and seals against the driveshaft to seal the opening in the housing. The fluid pressure pulse generator comprises a stator with a bore therethrough configured to fixedly attach to the housing or to a drill collar surrounding the fluid pressure pulse generator, and a rotor fixedly attached to the driveshaft. The driveshaft and rotor rotate relative to the fixed stator to generate pressure pulses in mud flowing through the fluid pressure pulse generator. The secondary seal is seated in the stator bore and surrounds and seals against a portion of the driveshaft extended out of the housing or a portion of the rotor to reduce the amount of mud, grit and debris impinging on the primary seal which could otherwise cause wear or damage the primary seal.

Telemetry tool with a fluid pressure pulse generator

A sealing member or gasket for sealing a space between two adjacent surfaces, the sealing member having at least one non-helical circumferential extension or ridge configured for size-on-size or press fit engagement with a corresponding recess in at least one of the surfaces being sealed. The sealing member can be formed by molding followed by insertion between the two adjacent surfaces, or by positioning the surfaces adjacent one another and then injecting or pouring the sealing member material into the space and allowing it to solidify in place.

Sealing gasket and method for creating same

A fluid pressure pulse generator for a downhole telemetry tool comprising a stator and a rotor. The stator comprises a stator body and a plurality of radially extending stator projections spaced around the stator body, whereby adjacently spaced stator projections define stator flow channels extending therebetween. The rotor comprises a rotor body and a plurality of radially extending rotor projections spaced around the rotor body. The rotor projections are axially adjacent to the stator projections and the rotor is rotatable relative to the stator such that the rotor projections move in and out of fluid communication with the stator flow channels to create fluid pressure pulses in fluid flowing through the stator flow channels. The rotor projections may be positioned downhole of the stator projections and include a self-correction mechanism to move the rotor to an open flow position where the rotor projections are out of fluid communication with the stator flow channels if the telemetry tool fails. The stator body may be configured to fixedly attach to a pulser assembly of the downhole telemetry tool and the rotor may be configured to fixedly attach to a driveshaft of the pulser assembly with the driveshaft and/or the rotor body received within the bore of the stator body such that the stator projections are positioned between the pulser assembly and the rotor projections.

A flow bypass sleeve for a fluid pressure pulse generator of a downhole telemetry tool. The fluid pressure pulse generator comprising a stator having one or more flow channels or orifices through which drilling fluid flows and a rotor which rotates relative to the stator to move in and out of fluid communication with the flow channels or orifices to create fluid pressure pulses in the drilling fluid flowing through the fluid pressure pulse generator. The flow bypass sleeve is configured to attach to a drill collar which housing the telemetry tool and comprises a body with a bore therethrough which receives the fluid pressure pulse generator. The body includes at least one longitudinally extending bypass channel comprising a groove longitudinally extending along an internal surface of the body or an aperture longitudinally extending through the body. The bypass channel extends across at least a portion of both the stator and the rotor when the fluid pressure pulse generator is received in the flow bypass sleeve such that the drilling fluid flows along the bypass channel as well as flowing through the flow channels or orifices. The bypass channel diverts drilling fluid around the fluid pressure pulse generator and may be dimensioned to control the amount of drilling fluid being diverted.
