A controller of a boost converter may be configured to dynamically adjust conditions within the boost converter by monitoring conditions in the boost converter. For example, the controller may determine an current inductance value for an inductor of the boost converter by monitoring a current through the inductor. When the inductance value of the inductor is known, a slope compensation value may be used in determining a transition time between charging the inductor of the boost converter and discharging the inductor.

During operation of a boost converter conditions may exist that result in a reverse current through the boost converter, such as when a load drop from the boost converter occurs. During the reverse current period, inductance value determinations made during a forward current period may be used to estimate a magnitude of the reverse current and this estimate used by a controller to control the boost converter and return the boost converter to normal operation. The controller may control the boost converter by changing a ratio of charging and discharging time for an inductor of the boost converter, decreasing a bandwidth of the boost converter, and/or increasing a resistance of the boost converter.

Determination of inductor current during reverse current in a boost converter

A personal audio device, such as a wireless telephone, includes an adaptive noise canceling (ANC) circuit that adaptively generates an anti-noise signal from a reference microphone signal and injects the anti-noise signal into the speaker or other transducer output to cause cancellation of ambient audio sounds. An error microphone is also provided proximate to the speaker to provide an error signal indicative of the effectiveness of the noise cancellation. A secondary path estimating adaptive filter is used to estimate the electro-acoustical path from the noise canceling circuit through the transducer so that source audio can be removed from the error signal. A level of the source audio with respect to the ambient audio is determined to determine whether the system may generate erroneous anti-noise and/or become unstable.

Source audio acoustic leakage detection and management in an adaptive noise canceling system

Thermal levels in an inductor of a boost converter may be managed by implementing peak current limits for the boost converter. For example, an inductor may be allowed to conduct above a certain peak current limit for a certain period of time before the current is reduced by a controller to a low current limit. The controller may hold the low current limit in place for a certain period of time, after which the current through the inductor is allowed to again exceed the low current limit. However, if the high current limit is again exceeded or sustained for a certain period of time, the low current limit may be again imposed by the controller.

Controller for imposing current limits on a boost converter for managing thermal loads

Audio amplification may be improved by controlling an audio amplifier based on the audio signal being amplified. For example, when the audio signal level increases or decreases, a boost voltage provided to an audio amplifier by a boost converter may also be increased or decreased. In another example, when the audio signal level decrease below a certain level, the audio amplifier may be switched from amplifying the audio signal with a boost converter input to amplifying the audio signal with a low voltage input. Control of the audio amplifier may be implemented in a digital boost converter controller coupled to the boost converter and/or the audio amplifier.

An adaptive noise canceling (ANC) circuit adaptively generates an anti-noise signal from a reference microphone signal that is injected into the speaker or other transducer output to cause cancellation of ambient audio sounds. An error microphone proximate the speaker provides an error signal. A secondary path estimating adaptive filter estimates the electro-acoustical path from the noise canceling circuit through the transducer so that source audio can be removed from the error signal. Tones in the source audio, such as remote ringtones, present in downlink audio during initiation of a telephone call, are detected by a tone detector using accumulated tone persistence and non-silence hangover counting, and adaptation of the secondary path estimating adaptive filter is halted to prevent adapting to the tones. Adaptation of the adaptive filters is then sequenced so any disruption of the secondary path adaptive filter response is removed before allowing the anti-noise generating filter to adapt.

Downlink tone detection and adaptation of a secondary path response model in an adaptive noise canceling system

A personal audio device, such as a wireless telephone, includes an adaptive noise canceling (ANC) circuit that adaptively generates an anti-noise signal from a reference microphone signal that measures the ambient audio and an error microphone signal that measures the output of an output transducer plus any ambient audio at that location and injects the anti-noise signal at the transducer output to cause cancellation of ambient audio sounds. A processing circuit uses the reference and error microphone to generate the anti-noise signal, which can be generated by an adaptive filter operating at a multiple of the ANC coefficient update rate. Downlink audio can be combined with the high data rate anti-noise signal by interpolation. High-pass filters in the control paths reduce DC offset in the ANC circuits, and ANC coefficient adaptation can be halted when downlink audio is not detected.

An error microphone is also provided proximate the speaker to estimate an electro-acoustical path from the noise canceling circuit through the transducer. A processing circuit determines a degree of coupling between the user's ear and the transducer and adjusts the adaptive cancellation of the ambient sounds to prevent erroneous and possibly disruptive generation of the anti-noise signal if the degree of coupling lies either below or above a range of normal operating ear contact pressure.

Ear-coupling detection and adjustment of adaptive response in noise-canceling in personal audio devices

An adaptive noise canceling (ANC) circuit adaptively generates an anti-noise signal that is injected into the speaker or other transducer output to cause cancellation of ambient audio sounds. At least one microphone provides an error signal indicative of the noise cancellation at the transducer, and the adaptive filter is adapted to minimize the error signal. In order to prevent improper adaptation or instabilities in one or both of the adaptive filters, spikes are detected in the error signal by comparing the error signal or its rate of change to a threshold. Therefore, if the magnitude of the coefficient error is greater than a threshold value for an update, the update is skipped. Alternatively the step size of the updates may be reduced. Similar criteria can be applied to a filter modeling the secondary path, based on detection applied to both the source audio and the error signal.

Robust adaptive noise canceling (ANC) in a personal audio device

A personal audio device, such as a wireless telephone, includes noise canceling circuit that adaptively generates an anti-noise signal from a reference microphone signal and injects the anti-noise signal into the speaker or other transducer output to cause cancellation of ambient audio sounds. An error microphone may also be provided proximate the speaker to measure the output of the transducer in order to control the adaptation of the anti-noise signal and to estimate an electro-acoustical path from the noise canceling circuit through the transducer. A processing circuit that performs the adaptive noise canceling (ANC) function also either adjusts the frequency response of the anti-noise signal with respect to the reference microphone signal, and/or by adjusting the response of the adaptive filter independent of the adaptation provided by the reference microphone signal.

Bandlimiting anti-noise in personal audio devices having adaptive noise cancellation (ANC)

A personal audio device, such as a headphone, includes an adaptive noise canceling (ANC) circuit that adaptively generates an anti-noise signal using one or more microphone signals that measure the ambient audio. The anti-noise signal is combined with source audio to provide an output for a speaker. The anti-noise signal causes cancellation of ambient audio sounds that appear in the microphone signals. A processing circuit uses the reference microphone to generate the anti-noise signal using one or more adaptive filters. The processing circuit also includes low-pass filters that remove quantization noise images at the output of the adaptive filter to reduce the dynamic range required at the output of the adaptive filter.
