A method of separating a glass web includes the steps of placing the glass web in tension by applying an in-plane tension to the glass web in a tensile direction and producing a region of increased tension on a first major surface of the glass web by imparting a curvature in the glass web. The method further includes separating the glass web along a separation path parallel to an axis of the curvature and transverse to the tensile direction by applying a defect to a portion of the first major surface in the region of increased tension.

A method and apparatus for processing glass comprising a forming apparatus in a first processing zone, the forming apparatus configured to form a glass ribbon having a first direction of travel in the first processing zone. The apparatus also includes a first cutting apparatus in a second processing zone, the first cutting apparatus configured to separate one or more portions of the glass ribbon, the glass ribbon having a second direction of travel. The apparatus includes a first buffer zone between the first processing zone and the second processing zone in which the glass ribbon is supported in a first catenary between two, spaced-apart payoff positions. The second direction of travel in the second processing zone can be orthogonal to the first direction of travel in the first processing zone.

Methods and systems for processing of glass ribbon

A method of continuously processing glass ribbon having a thickness &#x2264;0.3 mm. The method includes providing a glass processing apparatus having a first processing zone, a second processing zone and a third processing zone. The glass ribbon is continuously fed from the first processing zone, through the second processing zone to the third processing zone. The feed rate of the glass ribbon is controlled through each processing zone using a global control device. A first buffer zone is provided between the first processing zone and the second processing zone in which the glass substrate is supported in a first catenary between two, spaced-apart, payoff positions. A second buffer zone is provided between the second processing zone and the third processing zone in which the glass substrate is supported in a second catenary between two, spaced-apart, payoff positions.

Continuous processing of flexible glass ribbon

Methods and apparatus provide for: conveying a glass web from a source toward a destination in a transport direction; scoring the glass web in a width direction thereof to produce a score line having a plurality of separated score segments, thereby defining a section of the glass web between the score line and a leading edge of the glass web; supporting the glass web such that an increasing portion of the section of the glass web becomes cantilevered as the glass web is conveyed such that the portion of the section of the glass web is sufficiently large to generate stress in the respective score segments and drive respective cracks through the thickness of the glass web; and permitting the section of the glass web to separate from the glass web along the score line.

A glass manufacturing apparatus comprises a forming device configured to produce a glass ribbon and a control device configured to independently operate a first pull roll apparatus and a second pull roll apparatus such that the first pull roll apparatus rotates with a substantially constant torque the second pull roll apparatus rotates with a substantially constant angular velocity. Non-contact, liquid-ejecting bearings () are provided for conveying flexible glass sheets (), such as LCD substrates, at high conveyance speeds, e.g., speeds of 15 meters/minute and above. The operating parameters and physical properties of the bearings satisfy at least one of the following conditions: (a) the average flow rate from the bearing's orifices () is in the range of 100-800 milliliters/minute/orifice; (b) the orifices' average horizontal pitch (P) is in the range of 20-55 millimeters; and/or (c) the orifices' average size (e.g., D) is in the range of 1.0-4.5 millimeters. The bearings () can reduce the time-averaged, peak-to-peak variation in the spacing between a LCD substrate () traveling at 15 meters/minute and the face () of the bearing () to less than 100 microns, thus reducing the chances that the bearing () will lose control of the substrate () or that the substrate () will hit the bearing ().

Liquid-ejecting bearings for transport of glass sheets

Methods for producing a glass ribbon include the step of drawing a glass ribbon from a quantity of molten glass and detecting an instability in the glass ribbon. In response to the detected instability, the method can further include the step of automatically adjusting an operating variable for each of a plurality of stabilizing elements simultaneously with a controller to at least partially counter the detected instability.

A method for beveling a thin glass plate by simultaneously grinding an edge of the glass using multiple abrasive cup wheels, wherein the edge of the glass plate is extended from the fixturing device. The extension of the glass plate allows the glass plate to bend in response to forces applied by the abrasive cup wheels, thereby reducing the sensitivity of the grinding process to variations in position of the abrasive wheels. The axes of rotation of the abrasive wheels are separated by a distance selected to prevent deflection in the glass plate caused by a first abrasive wheel to influence the deflection in the glass plate caused by a second (adjacent) abrasive wheel.

Still further, the glass element has a puncture resistance of &#x2267;1.5 kgf when the first primary surface of the glass element is loaded with a tungsten carbide ball having a diameter of 1.5 mm.

Methods and apparatuses for managing pulling forces applied to a glass ribbon in a draw apparatus are disclosed. The method includes applying a front-side and a rear-side drive torque to a glass. The method further includes calculating automatically with the at least one electronic controller a front-side and a rear-side average pulling force applied to the glass ribbon and corresponding to a first time period of at least one rotation of the front-side or rear-side stub roller, respectively. The front-side average pulling force and the rear-side average pulling force are compared to establish a pulling force differential between the front-side average pulling force and the rear-side average pulling force. One or more of the front-side drive torque or the rear-side drive torque are modified to decrease the pulling force differential between the front-side average pulling force and the rear-side average pulling force.
