Methods and apparatus for power optimization in e.g., a wireless mobile device. In one embodiment, the optimization is effected via intelligent idle mode current drain management. In an exemplary LTE cellular network context, the user equipment (UE) only powers on its transceiver for a subset of Discontinuous Reception (DRX) cycles based on e.g., the quality of the radio environment, power considerations, location, etc. For example, if a UE has not moved, and its radio reception quality is good, the UE is likely to successfully receive a paging notification (i.e., without multiple attempts). Consequently, the UE configures itself to receive only a single paging indication.

Methods and apparatus for improving power consumption in a wireless network

A method for reducing call drops in uplink power limited scenarios is disclosed. The method can include a wireless communication device determining that the wireless communication device is experiencing an uplink power limited condition in which a transmission power of the wireless communication device is limited to a level below a power class level of the wireless communication device. The method can further include defining a downlink power threshold for sending a measurement report for triggering a handover based on the uplink power limited condition. The downlink power threshold can be higher than a threshold configured by a serving base station. The method can additionally include determining based on measured downlink power that the calculated downlink power threshold is satisfied and sending a measurement report for triggering a handover to the serving base station in response to the downlink power threshold being satisfied.

Reducing call drops in uplink power limited scenarios

Apparatus and methods for channel estimation in a Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) are disclosed. A representative method includes a wireless communication device receiving multiple frames, each frame including multiple subframes, each subframe including multiple symbols. The wireless communication device determines whether subframes include MBMS data or not. For subframes that include MBMS data, the wireless communication device excludes all or certain symbols of the subframes that include MBMS data from a channel estimation process. The wireless communication device determines whether the subframes include MBMS data based at least in part on a channel impulse response and/or a channel energy response for one or more symbols of the subframes.

MBSFN-aware adaptive channel estimation

Adaptive out-of-service search behavior by a wireless user equipment (UE) device. The UE may perform cellular communications according to a radio access technology (RAT). It may be determined that cellular service according to the RAT is not available. A search algorithm may be selected from at least two possible search algorithms. A search for cellular service according to the RAT may be performed according to the search algorithm. The various possible search algorithms may specify different ratios of time spent scanning for cellular service to time spent sleeping. The selected search algorithm may be chosen based on any or all of an estimated remaining battery life of the UE, a user activity level, user input, or various other considerations.

Adaptive network searching in out-of-service scenarios

Methods and apparatuses to select a transmit antenna in a mobile wireless device connected to a wireless network are described. The mobile wireless device monitors received signal characteristics through first and second antennas and switches antennas based on the monitored signal characteristics and on an assessment of the sufficiency of available transmit power headroom to accommodate data transmissions in the uplink direction. Sufficiency is determined based on one or more criteria including achievable data rate throughput, quality of service, grade of service, an amount of data buffered, an amount of resources allocated by the wireless network and a number of 'power up' commands received by the mobile wireless device during a pre-determined time interval.

Transmit antenna selection in a mobile wireless device

Apparatus and methods of performing a network cell reselection for a mobile device after a handover attempt fails. Initially, a handover is attempted for the mobile device in a radio resource control (RRC) connected mode from a serving network base station to a target network base station. Next a failure condition associated with the handover attempt is identified by the mobile device. In one scenario, the failure condition is identified in response to the mobile device receiving an RRC connection release message from its serving network base station. In another scenario, the failure condition is identified when the mobile device detects a radio link failure event. Thereafter, the mobile device performs a network scan to identify any available network base stations for the network cell reselection. Subsequently, the mobile device attaches to a preferred network base station of the identified available network base stations to complete the network cell reselection.

Dynamic network cell reselection after a failed handover

Methods and apparatus for resolving incomplete message content in networks. Various embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to correction and recovery of incomplete measurement report configuration messages within a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. Specifically, within certain LTE networks, existing messaging may be incomplete in regards to various nearby ancillary networks, but still sufficient with regards to measurement requirements of the LTE network itself. Since the mobile device can continue operation within the LTE network, the mobile device can safely ignore or correct the measurement report configuration message.

Apparatus and methods for resolving incomplete message content in networks

Cell re-selection in a device configured to operate according to multiple cellular communication protocols. The device may operate according to a first cellular communication protocol at a first time, which may include attaching to a first cell. The device may operate according to a second cellular communication protocol at a second time. Operations according to the first cellular communication protocol may be suspended while operating according to the second cellular communication protocol. The device may attempt to resume operating according to the first cellular communication protocol at a third time. This may include measuring one or more of signal strength or signal quality of the first cell. The wireless device may select a cell to which to attach at the third time based at least in part on the measured signal strength and signal quality of the first cell.

Cell re-selection in a device configured to operate according to multiple cellular communication protocols

Transmission capacity for a control channel sent to multiple mobile wireless devices in a wireless network is increased by transmitting the control channel using multi user multiple input multiple output transmissions (MU MIMO). Received signal quality measured at mobile wireless devices in a radio sector are communicated to a radio node and used to determine one or more sets of mobile wireless devices to share transmission of control channel elements on the same time and frequency resource element. The radio node indicates the use of MU MIMO and the selection of precoding matrices to each of the mobile wireless devices in the each set of mobile wireless devices.

Wireless radio access network control channel capacity management

A method and apparatus for wireless network selection by a wireless mobile device is disclosed. In one embodiment, network performance metrics related to the wireless networks to be considered can be evaluated. The network performance metrics can be weighted and a related ranking metric can be determined. The ranking metric can be used to select a wireless network. In one embodiment, network performance metrics can include a round trip time, which describes a round trip data transit time between the wireless mobile device to a particular network device, and a power metric describing the amount of power needed to transfer an amount of data.

Wireless network selection

Methods and apparatus for parameter (e.g., timing) adjustment in a wireless network. In one embodiment, the timing adjustment includes detection and compensation for one or more missed adjustment messages. In one variant, for certain designated events, a client device may ignore a timer expiration, and apply a previously stored timing advance (TA) command. For example, a user equipment (UE) will determine if a TA command has been missed during a measurement gap interval (such as e.g., to perform measurements on an unsynchronized network), and reuse the previous TA command value. Reusing the TA command value introduces negligible error, which can be corrected in existing error correction capabilities (e.g., OFDM cyclic prefixes, etc.).

Methods and apparatus for parameter adjustment during measurement gaps

A method to control measurement messaging is performed at a mobile wireless device. The mobile wireless device transmits a first measurement message to a radio access network in a wireless network and stores the first measurement message pending receipt of an acknowledgement from the radio access network. Before receiving the acknowledgement to the first measurement message, the mobile wireless device determines at least one parameter included in the first measurement message requires updating. The mobile wireless device deletes the stored pending first measurement message and transmits a second measurement message to the radio access network including an updated value for the at least one parameter in the first measurement message.
