A method for facilitating the downloading of an application from a server computer to a client device, whereby the client device generates to the server computer an initiation request for information describing available applications. In response to receipt of the initiation request, the server computer retrieves, for each available application, information describing the respective application, and a link to an application descriptor for the respective application. The server computer transmits the information and link to the client device, which in turn displays the information and stores the link. When the user selects an application, the link for the selected application is recalled and is reached on the server computer for retrieval of the application descriptor. From the application descriptor, the client device may determine whether the application fits the device profile and, hence, whether to download the application.

System, and associated method, for downloading an application

Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating exchange of configuration indicia associated with a mobile node operable in a radio communication system. The mobile node is dynamically-configurable, and includes a logic tree. The indicia is provided to a network manager responsive to request therefore or upon initiation by the mobile node. When initiated at the network, a request message generator located at a network manager generates a get message to request that certain configuration indicia be provided to the network manager. The mobile node, upon delivery of the get message thereto, retrieves the requested information, at a selected level of detail, and returns the indicia to the network manager.

A method includes, in response to receiving a certain type of HTTP request message from a device during a browsing session, sending a HTTP response message to the device. The HTTP response message includes a dedicated MIME-type for indicating that a device management session is being initiated, and the device management session is identified by an identifier that forms part of the HTTP response message. The device replies to the HTTP response message with a device management session reply that comprises device details and the identifier. Using the device details, the system develops a list containing at least one download option that is compatible with the device and sends the list to the device. In response to a user selecting the at least one download option from the list, the system delivers the selected at least one download option to the device during a device management session.

Methods and apparatus to integrate mobile communications device management with web browsing

Apparatus, and an associated method, for downloading an operational parameter to a mobile station. The operational parameter is stored at a server operated by an operator of a communication system in which the mobile station is operable. When the parameter is to be downloaded to the mobile station, the server instructs a SMS, or other data message, service center to generate a data message to be delivered to the mobile station, instructing the mobile station to initiate a data call connection with the server. When a data call connection is formed, the operational parameter is downloaded to the mobile station, thereafter to be used by the mobile station in subsequent communication operations in the communication system.

A method of starting a session in a synchronization system. The maximum size of a message that is to be sent from a synchronization server to a mobile station for the request, and coding instructions, by which at least one of the identifiers can be coded into a bit sequence requiring substantially fewer bits than its ASCII presentation, are determined in the synchronization server. Decoding instructions, by means of which the original identifier is obtained from the bit sequence, are determined in the mobile station. When the purpose is to transmit a request indicating the need for starting a session to at least one mobile station, a message is formed, is shorter or as long as the maximum size and includes the pre-selected identifiers, at least one of which is presented as a bit sequence defined according to the coding instructions. The mobile station forms a session initialization message on the basis of the information included in the message received from the server, at least part of information being defined from the received bit sequence according to the decoding instructions.

Starting a session in a synchronization system

An apparatus and method is disclosed for configuring a mobile radio station device (e.g., a cellular telephone) when the mobile radio station device or 'mobile station' is initially configured for service. The present invention comprises an apparatus and method for downloading initial operational parameters to a mobile station using a radio link. The initial operational parameters are downloaded using a data call connection formed with the mobile station. A data message, such as a Short Message Service (SMS) message, is sent to the mobile station. The data message requests the mobile station to initiate a data call connection with a node-device that contains (or has access to) the initial operational parameters. The mobile station forms a data call connection with the node-device and receives the initial operational parameters.

Automated service configuration of mobile radio station devices

Apparatus, and an associated method, for allocating charges that accrue to download content to a mobile station from a data source, either a third-party data source or a system-operator data source. An SMS message is generated at an SMS center that includes an identification of the type of data source that is to originate the data. A detector at the mobile station detects the SMS message and the identification of the type of data source at which the content is to be originated. A table is accessed, and a calling number associated with the data source is retrieved therefrom. A terminal management session is thereafter formed utilizing the retrieved calling number. The calling number forms either a toll number or a toll-free number and is determinative of to where charges shall be allocated to download the content.

Decision-basing apparatus, and an associated method, for radio device responsive to origination source of data sent thereto

Apparatus, and an associated method for downloading operation parameters to a mobile station by way of a radio link. The operating parameters include, for instance, preferred roaming list, number assignment module, enhanced variable rate coder, IP address, access point setup parameters, and the like, to be used during operation of the mobile station. Values of the operational parameter are input by way of the user interface to a server coupled to the network infrastructure of the communication system in which the mobile station is operable. Values of the operational parameters are encoded and routed to the mobile station by way of the network infrastructure of the communication system and a radio link formed with the mobile station. Once detected at the mobile station, the values are stored at a storage element, and later retrieved during subsequent operation of the mobile station.
