A cushioning dunnage producing mechanism and method wherein the mechanism utilizes one or more webs of sheet-like stock material, with the stock material being adapted to be disposed by the mechanism in generally superimposed relation and then fed into a crumpler section of tubular-like construction, to radially compress the sheet-like material into a pad-like dunnage product. The lateral edges of the stock material are caused to be rolled inwardly into generally spiral-like form, prior to passage of the stock material into the crumpler section, by a forming frame of generally triangular-like shape both in plan and in side elevation, with the nose of the forming frame being disposed closely adjacent the entranceway to the crumpler section. Meshed spur gears coacting with the crumpler section, coin or stitch the confronting portions of the rolled edges of stock material together, to hold the produced dunnage product in a pad-like configuration. The forming frame mechanism is operable to cause the central coined or stitched section of the pad-like product to be as thin as possible, while urging the stock material into the lateral pillow-like portions of the product, thereby providing greater resiliency to the pad-like product and one of lesser density.

A dunnage converter mechanism for producing relatively low density pad-like cushioning dunnage product from flexible sheet-like stock material in roll form. The converter includes means for pulling the sheet-like stock material from a supply roll thereof into the mechanism while causing inward rolling of the lateral edges of the sheet-like stock material, resulting in a pad-like cushioning product emitted from the machine, with the product having lateral relatively resilient pillow-like portions and a central connecting section holding the pillow-like portions together in generally side-by-side attached relation. A settable control means is provided in an associated control circuit coupled to the electric drive motor for the converter mechanism, for selectively providing for programming the motor for actuation thereof during selected predetermined periods of time, whereby the pad-like dunnage product can be produced by the mechanism for a selected period of time of a plurality of time periods without any further action being needed on the part of a machine operator, after which the mechanism automatically shuts down production of the cushioning product. The settable control includes a selector module for selecting one of a plurality of time periods (e.g. seconds, minutes or hours) together with means for selecting ranges of said selected one time period, so that various lengths or runs of the produced cushioning product can be automatically provided.

A mechanism for producing low density pad-like resilient cushioning dunnage product from sheet-like stock material, such as for instance paper, comprising a support for rotatably mounting a roll of sheet-like stock material in operative condition thereon, and projections on the support adapted for coupling with receptacle structure defining recesses on a separable mobile cart, for detachably coupling the cart to the mechanism, with the cart having mounts thereon for rotatably mounting a roll of sheet-like stock material and in position for feeding the stock material into the dunnage producing mechanism, when the latter and the cart are in coupled condition, to create the pad-like cushioning dunnage product.

Mechanism for producing pad-like cushioning dunnage from sheet material

A method and apparatus for the production of air cell cushioning material, for protective cushioning purposes in packaging or other purposes, with the air cell product being formed from flexible, single stratum sheet of low density, low melting point thermoplastic, such as low density polyethylene film. The method and apparatus include an arrangement for cooling an embossed film on a rotatable forming drum to a predetermined temperature range prior to applying a sealing laminating film to the cooled embossed film, and are such that the apparatus can be halted in its operation without injurious effects to any substantial amount of the air cell product being produced, and can be restarted to again commence production of the air cell product. The apparatus and method utilize clear thermoplastic single stratum film, and result in an effective air cell cushioning product which possesses extremely good clarity even after the heating and pressure steps utilized in the production of the product.

Method and apparatus for making an air cell cushioning product

A method and apparatus for the production of air cell cushioning dunnage material, for protective cushioning purposes in packaging or other purposes, with the air cell product possessing substantial strength, and the ability to retain its original thickness under load. The method and apparatus are such that the apparatus can be halted in its operation without injurious effects to the dunnage product being produced, and can be restarted to again commence production of the cushioning dunnage product. The apparatus and method utilize flexible thermoplastic sheets or film of material, to produce the air cell product, with the plastic sheets being preferably formed of a composite of an intermediate stratum of relatively high density high melting point plastic, and exterior stratums of relatively low density, low melting point thermoplastic bonded to the intermediate stratum. Various other embodiments of flexible air cell sheeting are also disclosed.

Cushioning dunnage apparatus

A method and apparatus for the production of thermoplastic film air cell cushioning product. The method and apparatus utilize as stock material flexible thermoplastic film formed of a composite of a stratum of relatively high density, high melting point thermoplastic and another stratum of relatively low density, low melting point thermoplastic bonded to the first mentioned stratum. A sheet of the composite thermoplastic film material is heated well above the melting point of the low melting point stratum but below the melting point of the high density stratum and is applied to a rotating forming drum and vacuum formed, to produce the air cells in the product, and then a sheet of the film material which has been heated, is generally immediately laminated to the heated sheet on the drum, with the temperature of the second mentioned sheet being at its application to the embossed sheet, below the melting point temperature of the low density stratum and at a maximum temperature approximating the mean temperature between the heat softening point and the Vicat softening point of the low density stratum, with the second mentioned sheet being applied with associated pressure to the heated embossed first sheet on the rotating forming drum. The apparatus is relatively compact and the method and apparatus are energy efficient.

Then the inwardly rolled stock is passed into a crumpler section where mechanism attach together the confronting portions of the rolled edges of the stock material generally centrally, in a direction lengthwise thereof, to retain the dunnage product in highly compressible, lightweight pad-like form. A transfer vehicle is adapted to coact with the dunnage producing mechanism for storing a preselected amount of the pad-like dunnage product on the vehicle, whereupon the vehicle can be moved to a location distant from the dunnage producing mechanism for use at the distant location.
