Systems and methods facilitating relocatability of devices between networks

A broad aspect of the invention provides a method of providing mobility support for a mobile node's traffic. The method involves maintaining context information for the mobile node on each of a first plurality of network nodes carrying the traffic; and proactively transferring and maintaining at least a portion of the context information in a plurality of network nodes which are not carrying the traffic, but which are candidates for carrying the traffic due to mobility of the mobile node. The method typically further involves defining and maintaining a definition of the second plurality of network nodes. In one embodiment of the invention, this involves adding a particular network node to the second plurality when the particular network node becomes a candidate for carrying the traffic, removing a particular network node from the second plurality when the particular network node is no longer a candidate for carrying the traffic.

Context transfer systems and methods in support of mobility

A broad aspect of the invention provides a method of providing mobility support for a mobile node's traffic. The method involves maintaining context information for the mobile node on each of a first plurality of network nodes carrying the traffic; and proactively transferring and maintaining at least a portion of the context information in a plurality of network nodes which are not carrying the traffic, but which are candidates for carrying the traffic due to mobility of the mobile node. The method typically further involves defining and maintaining a definition of the second plurality of network nodes. In one embodiment of the invention, this involves adding a particular network node to the second plurality when the particular network node becomes a candidate for carrying the traffic, removing a particular network node from the second plurality when the particular network node is no longer a candidate for carrying the traffic. Furthermore, for each node in the second plurality of network nodes, a definition is made of a node in the first plurality of network nodes from which to obtain the context information.

A call admission method and apparatus are disclosed which maximizes the wireless channel utilization subject to a predetermined bound on the call dropping and packet loss probabilities for variable-bit-rate traffic in a packet switched network. The call admission scheme is stochastic and dynamic, hence it is able to adapt to a wide range of traffic fluctuations and mobility patterns. The call admission scheme disclosed satisfies a set of constraints on call dropping and packet loss probabilities while maintaining high bandwidth utilization.

Call admission control for a wireless network

A radio link adapter for wireless transmission of multimedia data through a communication link between a radio access network (RAN) and a mobile station (MS), is provided. The information flow is constantly monitored to determine an information element (IE) type of service requirements and for allocating paired radio link adapters (RLAs) designed to fit the respective type of service requirements. A connection end may be initially established in the RAN or in the MS. An analyser monitors the link, detects the type of service (ToS) required, and dynamically allocates the appropriate type of RLA to the connection. There is no need to recreate the connection when selecting the adapter for transporting various types of services and therefore, the transport of the information flow of a specific ToS over the communication link is optimized, while maintaining the end-to-end quality of service (QoS).

Dynamic radio link adaptation

An automatic cell transfer is made, when a mobile detects certain threshold exit bit or symbol error rate in a message transmitted from the base station with which it is communicating, by the mobile then sampling sequentially transmitted messages from adjacent base stations (on the same or different frequencies) and monitoring their bit or symbol error rates until a base station is found having a bit or symbol error rate less than a preselected minimum entry threshold bit or symbol error rate which in turn is less than the exit bit or symbol error rate and transferring communication from the mobile to the base station so selected. In one arrangement, each base station repeatedly and intermittently transmits a known quality assessment message and the mobile continually reviews the received message for its error rate.
