Method and apparatus for thermal treatment of printing surface in relief printing

This invention provides membrane-mediated electropolishing (MMEP) processes for polishing and/or planarizing metal work pieces using topographically patterned membranes. The processes can be used for both pure metals and alloys, and provide advantages over conventional electropolishing processes and known MMEP processes using smooth membranes. This invention also provides a cathode half-cell and an apparatus useful in membrane-mediated electropolishing processes. The invention also provides processes for electroengraving and electromachining topographic patterns, holes and/or grooves into the surface of a metal work piece.

Membrane-mediated electropolishing with topographically patterned membranes

This invention provides a membrane-mediated electropolishing apparatus for polishing and/or planarizing metal work-pieces. The work-piece is wetted with a low-conductivity fluid. The wetted work-piece is contacted with a first side of a charge-selective ion-conducting membrane, wherein the second side contacts a conductive electrolyte solution in electrical contact with a electrode. Current flow between the electrode and the work-piece electropolishes metal from the work-piece. This invention also provides a half-cell adapted for use in membrane-mediated electropolishing having a fully or partially enclosed volume, a conductive electrolyte which partially or essentially fills the enclosed volume, an electrode which is in contact with the electrolyte, and a charge-selective ion-conducting membrane which seals one surface of the enclosed volume, cavity or vessel in such a way that the internal surface of said membrane contacts the electrolyte solution or gel and the external surface is accessible to contact the work-piece.

Apparatus adapted for membrane-mediated electropolishing

A method and apparatus for simultaneously performing chemical reactions and determining molecular transport dynamics on a plurality of samples such as thin film samples. The apparatus of the present invention is capable of containing multiple samples in individual sample holding positions in a sample holder within a housing and maintaining those holding positions in chemical isolation from each other. Under control of a computerized controller, the apparatus positions the sample holder so that each sample holding position may be positioned adjacent to one or more ports connected to a distribution manifold. The apparatus exposes each sample to one or more fluids in liquid or gas phase, thereby carrying out a chemical reaction and/or determining molecular transport dynamics under controlled temperature and pressure conditions. The sample holding positions may be positioned in an analytical measurement station within the housing so that the resulting chemical compound or mixture may be characterized.

Method and apparatus for performing chemical reactions in a plurality of samples

A rotary transformer for coupling electrical power at a high level into a rotor operable at a high rotational speed without the introduction of undesirable electromagnetic torque and problems of dynamic mechanical instability comprises a stationary primary mounted in surrounding relationship with respect to the rotor, an electromagnetic shield having an exterior surface thereon mounted to the rotor, and a secondary mounted on the exterior surface of the shield. The secondary is connected in an electrical circuit with the load such that the application of an alternating current having a frequency of at least one (1) kilohertz to the primary produces an alternating electromagnetic field having flux lines in the secondary in the secondary oriented generally parallel to the axis of rotation. The alternation of the electromagnetic field induces a voltage in the secondary that generates an electric current to the load. The shield isolates the rotor from the alternating electromagnetic field to prevent eddy current heating of the rotor.
