An improved railroad coupler mount for attaching equipment, such as an end-of-train device (EOT), marker light, test gear, etc., to a railroad coupler. The mount is comprised of a pivoting lever with brace (a V- or U-shaped notch) that grips the rib between vertically spaced coupler coring holes and a lever tip that contacts the inner wall of the coupler top coring hole, a pad that bears against the exterior face of the coupler guard arm side and a mechanism that forcibly pivots the lever tip towards the pad on an axis roughly parallel to the coupler axis.

A railroad coupler mount includes a hook (20) for contacting the inside upper lip (28) of a coupler head (10) within a single coring hole (12a), a jaw member (22) which engages the rib (18) between a pair of coring holes (12a and 14a), a pad (24) for abutting against an outside surface (26) of the coupler head (10), and a handle (30) for orienting the hook (20) in the transverse or upright positions. In a preferred configuration, end-of-train signalling and monitoring equipment (42) is connected to a railroad coupler mount (44) and the handle (64) which tightens the hook (58) against the inside lip of the coupler head also serves the function of locking a battery compartment door (54) closed.

A pressure relief valve for a railway emergency brake system that is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and to assemble and that, in operation, is self-cleaning of brake pipe dirt and debris. The inventive valve comprises a valve body having a hollow space being divided by a diaphragm into a first and a second chamber. Chambers are coupled via an orifice in the diaphragm, coupling pressure from the first chamber to the second. The valve comprises a peg aligned with the orifice, penetrating and cleaning the latter when the diaphragm moves from a closed position into an open position.

Pressure relief valve for railway brake emergency systems

A motor driven ball valve may be driven in two modes of operation; those modes are a normal or testing mode and an emergency mode. The ball valve, when in its full open position, has an air passage that allows for the rapid exhaust of air in the air pipe of the air brake system to atmosphere, thereby inducing the emergency application of the brakes. The rotating ball valve assembly is capable of infinite variation between its full closed and its full open positions. Thus, the motor drive, which is remotely controlled, can effectively modulate the reduction in air pressure in the air pipe for a variety of purposes, including normal operation of the brakes and testing the air brake system. The motor drive mechanism may be in a cam, gear, or follower configuration. When an emergency application of the brakes is required, the motor drive mechanism is disengaged to allow a spring or other torsion device to rapidly rotate the ball to full open position, while drawing minimal electrical power. The spring or other torsion mechanism is prestressed by the operation of the motor driven mechanism as it rotates the ball toward its closed position.

Rapid release valve mechanism

An improved railroad coupler mount (18) secures end of train signalling and monitoring equipment (40) to the coupler head (10) of the last car in a train. The coupler mount (18) is secured to the coupler head (10) by a banana shaped arm (20) which extends through relief holes (14a and 14b) in the guard arm side (12) of the coupler. A swivel toggle (22) positioned at the end of the arm (20) is pivoted to a perpendicular orientation relative to the arm (20) after it has been inserted through the relief holes (14a and 14b). A tightening screw (28) turned by knob (26) draws the arm (20) back out of the relief holes (14a and 14b) and causes the swivel toggle (22) to bear against the sidewall of the coupler head (10). A bulge (38) in the arm (20) is braced tightly against an inside wall of the coupler head (10) after tightening the arm (20). The coupler mount (18) includes a locking bar (52) for simultaneously locking a battery compartment door (50) on the equipment box (40) and locking the coupler mount (18) to the coupler head (10). The battery compartment door (50) is kept closed by an upwardly extending portion (58) of a rotating flange (56) positioned on one end of the locking bar (52). The coupler mount (18) is secured to the coupler head (10) by the bent end of the locking bar (52) being pivoted to an interfitting engagement with spokes (52) of the knob (26) after the banana arm (20) has been tightened. A pad (70) and V-jaws (72 and 74) positioned on the side of the mount provide stability.
