Enhanced efficiency of sunscreen compositions

An emulsion stabilizer includes a biopolymer blend of one or more cellulose ether and one or more cross-linked, modified starch wherein one or more of the cellulose ether or the cross-linked, modified starch is hydrophobically modified and wherein the total amount of cellulose ethers in the biopolymer blend is not greater than 50 wt %. The invention further relates to emulsion compositions comprising the emulsion stabilizer, and particularly oil-in-water emulsions. In one embodiment the emulsions are suitable for use in personal care formulations.

Certain aspects of the invention relate to compositions comprising UV blocking agents, a film forming polymer containing acid groups and a neutralizing agent. Such compositions have an increased SPF due to neutralization of at least a portion of the acid groups of the film forming agent by the neutralizing agent. The invention also discloses methods for increasing SPF of a composition as well as methods for using the novel composition.

The present invention details the use of starch silicate and starch siliconates in personal care formulations to enhance or provide aesthetic properties to skin care products. These properties can range from smoothness and silky feel to non-greasy and non-oily. These starch derivatives provide an alternative to organically modified starches which can be expensive to prepare and require the addition of inorganic salts to functionalize the reagents.

A personal care composition includes a hybrid copolymer including at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a naturally derived hydroxyl containing chain transfer agent as an end group, a hybrid synthetic copolymer including one or more synthetic polymers derived from the at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer with at least one initiator fragment as an end group and an effective amount of a cosmetic or personal care additive.

The present invention is directed to the use of xanthan gum, particularly heat treated xanthan gum, as a fixative in hair cosmetic compositions. Xanthan gum is advantageous in that it may be used with other hair fixatives and provides rheology modifying and other properties including excellent stiffness, gloss, dry comb, wet comb, non-flake, anti-static, feel and high humidity curl retention.

The present invention is directed to heat treated xanthan gums, which have improved solution viscosity over other xanthan gums heat-treated under the same processing conditions while maintaining the improved ease of use and the short, non-stringy gel texture of heat treated xanthan gums. Such high solution viscosity xanthan gums are suitable in a variety of applications, including cosmetic and personal care compositions.

The present invention relates to the use of acrylate copolymers, which provide excellent water resistance to personal care products without the undesirable waxy, greasy or heavy feel. Further, these acrylate copolymers are easy for manufacturers to use as they can be easily incorporated into the water phase without special processing.

Techniques for smoke detection are provided. In one aspect, an exemplary smoke detection device is provided. The smoke detection device comprises an infrared beam transmitting unit; an infrared beam receiving unit; and a control module associated with the infrared beam transmitting unit and the infrared beam receiving unit. The infrared beam transmitting unit and the infrared beam receiving unit are configured to communicate with each other, via an infrared beam, and with the control module, via a signal produced in response to smoke being present at a level that is greater than a threshold smoke level.

A personal care composition having at least one hydroxyalkylurea (HAU) optionally in combination with at least one other moisturizing agent. The at least one HAU, alone or together with the at least one moisturizing agent, provides not only the perception of moisturization, but also actual increased moisturization efficacy. When the two are used in combination in a personal care composition, they are provided in a synergistically moisturizing effective ratio to provide that perception of moisturization and increased moisturization efficacy. Such personal care compositions provide an enhanced smooth feel as well as enhanced flexibility, elasticity, suppleness and firmness without leaving a heavy or greasy feel.
