The present disclosure is directed to a system and method configured for curing non-reactive photopolymer collected by an absorbent blotting material during thermal processing of flexographic printing elements. Uncured non-reacted portions of the photopolymer are removed by contacting the one or more layers of photopolymer with the web of absorbent blotting material at an elevated temperature to soften or liquefy the uncured non-reacted portions of the one or more layers of photopolymer and absorb the softened or liquefied uncured non-reacted portions into the absorbent web of absorbent blotting material. The web of absorbent blotter material containing the absorbed softened or liquefied non-reacted portions of the photopolymer is exposed to actinic radiation from the one or more UV light sources to crosslink and cure the softened or liquefied non-reacted portions of the photopolymer.

Method and system for thermal processing of flexo printing elements

The present disclosure is directed to a thermal developing assembly that is configured to reduce (or eliminate) the reactivity of contaminants and/or unreacted photosensitive material associated with forming a relief image on a photosensitive printing element during thermal development. The thermal developing assembly is configured to reduce (or eliminate) the reactivity of a byproduct associated with forming a relief image on a photosensitive printing element, the byproduct including but not limited to, contaminants within vapors (e.g., fumes), contaminants within condensate, unreacted photosensitive material, and combinations thereof.

System for thermal development of flexographic printing plates

The present invention is directed to a method of selectively pre-exposing a photosensitive printing element prior to imagewise exposure in order to remove oxygen from the photosensitive layer prior to imagewise exposure. The invention is usable in a computer-to-plate process to produce flexographic relief image printing elements.

Method of pre-exposing relief image printing plate

An improved flexo processor and a method of using the improved flexo processor to increase the flexibility of both the type and the size of the flexographic printing element that may be processed. The novel thermal plate processor system is capable of processing both flat and round photosensitive printing elements with only minimal changes to the system. The thermal plate processor system may also include means for exposure and post-exposure/detack in the same system.

Flexo processor

An improved apparatus and a method of using the apparatus to remove non-crosslinked photopolymer from an imaged and exposed surface of a relief image printing element. Included are means for supporting and rotating the printing element, means for softening and/or melting non-crosslinked photopolymer on the imaged and exposed surface of the printing element, and at least one thermal developing assembly. The thermal developing assembly includes means for supplying an absorbent material that is contactable with the printing element, and that is capable of removing at least a portion of the softened and/or melted non-crosslinked photopolymer, and means for causing the absorbent material to contact at least a portion of the printing element. The absorbent material is backed with an endless impression belt that is supported by a plurality of rollers. When the absorbent material contacts the surface of the printing element, softened and/or melted non-crosslinked photopolymer on the surface of the printing element is removed.

Thermal development system and method of using the same

The present invention is directed to a method and a system for forming a relief image on a photosensitive printing element. The system comprises an enclosure housing a conveyor and a heatable roller. The photosensitive printing element is positioned on a continuous loop of the conveyor and the heatable roller is urged towards the photosensitive printing element on the conveyor. An absorbent material is conducted over the heatable roller and is used to absorb at least a portion of the liquefied or softened material from the photosensitive printing element when the heatable roller is heated. The system also comprises ventilation means operatively connected to the enclosure for treating and recycling air containing contaminants that are released into the enclosure as the portion of the photosensitive material is heated and then softens. The ventilation means typically include a particulate filter and a bed of adsorbent material. The treated air may then be returned to the enclosure.

An improved apparatus for thermally developing a flexographic printing element to reveal a relief image on the surface and a method of using the apparatus to expose and develop a flexographic printing element. The apparatus typically comprises means for softening or melting non-crosslinked photopolymer on the imaged and exposed surface of the flexographic printing element; at least one roll that is contactable with the imaged surface of the flexographic printing element and capable of moving over at least a portion of the imaged surface of the flexographic printing element to remove the softened or melted non-crosslinked photopolymer on the imaged and exposed surface of the flexographic printing element; and means for maintaining contact between the at least one roll and the imaged and exposed surface of the flexographic printing element. The means for softening or melting non-crosslinked photopolymer on the imaged and exposed surface of the flexographic printing element comprise a heater positioned adjacent to the imaged surface of the flexographic printing element and/or heating the at least one roll that contactable with the imaged surface of the flexographic printing element. The apparatus may also contain an exposure device to crosslink and cure the imaged surface of the flexographic printing element prior to thermal development.

Apparatus and method for thermally developing flexographic printing elements

An improved thermal development apparatus is used to remove uncured photopolymer from the imaged surface of a flexographic printing element. The apparatus typically comprises one or more heatable rolls that are contactable with an imaged surface of a flexographic printing element; and means for maintaining contact between the one or more heatable rolls and the imaged surface of the flexographic printing element. The one or more heatable rolls are heated and is moved over at least a portion of the imaged surface of the flexographic printing element, and non-crosslinked polymer on the imaged surface of the flexographic printing element is melted and removed by the one or more heatable rolls.

Apparatus and method for thermally developing flexographic printing sleeves

Disclosed is a system and method for controlling a continuous mixer having a gear pump discharge or an extruder screw discharge. The continuous mixer, which includes a charging orifice spaced apart from a discharge orifice, feeds material fed through the charging orifice through a melter/mixer. The material is caused to move through a chamber by one or more bladed rotors which are controlled by a motor. The discharge of this material through the mixer is controlled by the gear pump, and the RPM of the pump gears is controlled in relation to the torque produced by the motor which drives the bladed rotors. A change in torque produced by this motor will result in a change in the RPM of the pump gears, thereby maintaining the rotor torque and consequently the mixing energy exerted on the material being mixed in the mixer.
