A mill head for replaceable attachment to a base so as to collectively form a bone mill. The mill head includes shell with: a first opening in which bone stock is introduced into the head; and a second opening through which the bone chips are discharged. A cutting device is mounted in the shell to both rotate and move laterally. Attached to the cutting device are coupling features for engaging a drive spindle able to rotate the cutting device. Also attached to the housing is an alignment feature. The alignment feature engages a complementary alignment feature associated with the drive spindle so as a result of the engagement of the alignment features, the cutting device moves within the shell so that the cutting device coupling features are positioned to engage the drive spindle.

A mill head for replaceable attachment to a base so as to collectively form a bone mill. The mill head includes: a first opening in which bone stock is introduced into the head; a cutting device that converts the bone stock into bone chips; a second opening through which the bone chips are discharged; and a third opening through which a motor integral with the base is attached to the cutting device. Internal to the mill head are containment rings. The containment rings prevent the discharge of material through the third opening. The containment rings are services the internal component of the mill head on which the cutting device rests.

A bone mill including a base and a mill head that is removably attached to the base. A cutting disc is moveably disposed in the mill head. A motor is disposed in the base. A spindle attached to the motor releasably engages the cutting disk. The spindle is also capable of movement towards and away from the motor. A spring holds the mill head away from the motor. In some versions of the invention, the spring urges the spindle towards the cutting disc. The biasing force exerted by the spring urges the spindle into engagement with the cutting disc. A locking assembly releasably holds the mill head to the base in opposition of the force exerted by the spring.

A bone mill including a base and a mill head that is removably attached to the base. A cutting disc is rotatably disposed in the mill head. When the mill head is attached to base, the cutting disc is rotated by a motor internal to the base. A plunger mounted to the mill head urges the bone against the cutting disc. The cutting disc and an impingement plate internal to the mill head shear the bone into chips. The chips are discharged from an opening in the mill head into a catch tray removably attached to the mill head.

An auto-tracking spectrophotometer has a moveable look-ahead sensor for scanning at least a portion of a color matrix. The look-ahead sensor finds a portion of the color matrix for measurement by an optical system. The optical system for measuring the color matrix is then guided using the information provided by the look-ahead sensor.

A portable spectrophotometer includes a rotating wheel provided with a plurality of filters having filter characteristics in the 400 to 700 nanometer wavelength range. The filters are moved between an optical conduit and a photoelectric sensor as the wheel is rotated. In one embodiment, a lamp housing contains three object illuminating lamps circumferentially spaced apart by 120.degree. and projecting light onto the object sample at a 45.degree. angle to the object sample. Light reflected from the object sample is conducted through the optical conduit and focused on the optical sensor by means of a focusing lens. A blocking filter is interposed between the lens and the wheel and serves to block light outside of the 400 to 700 nanometer wavelength range. A side sensor receives light from one of the three lamps through the filters as the wheel is rotated and provides output signals which are used as reference signals for the individual filters. In another embodiment, the spectrophotometer includes an integrating sphere with an aperture for conducting specular-included light reflected from the object and an aperture for conducting specular-excluded light from the object. The integrating sphere spectrophotometer also includes a rotatable filter wheel, with a plurality of filters having filter characteristics in the 400 to 700 nanometers wave length range. A side sensor is also provided with the integrating sphere spectrophotometer. As the wheel is rotated, specular-included and specular-excluded light from an object sample to be tested is projected simultaneously through apertures of the sphere. Light detected by a side sensor is also simultaneously detected through one of the filters of the filter wheel. The integrating sphere spectrophotometer also includes an arrangement for providing calibration and compensation of reflectance measurements.
