2-Benzyl-7,7-dimethyl-6,8-dioxa-2-aza-spiro[3,5]nonane of the formula ##STR1## and a process for the preparation of that compound, which compound is useful as an intermediate in the preparation of 3-carboxy azetidine.

Compounds of the general formula ##STR1## in which a chlorine or bromine atom and A represents a hydrogen or metal atom or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, are prepared by cyclizing a compound of the general formula ##STR2## in which Hal' represents a chlorine or bromine atom, in the presence of an acid. The resulting compound is a useful intermediate in the synthesis of certain pyrethroid insecticides.
