Aspects of the present invention relate to systems and processes for obtaining desired mercaptans or thiophenes from a feed stream containing a mixture of mercaptans, thiophenes and other components. In one aspect of the invention, a system for separating one or more components from a feed stream of mixed mercaptans includes one or more distillation columns in connection with a feed containing mercaptans, the distillation column having a rectification section, a stripping section, and a feed side section separated from a side draw section by a dividing wall that extends from the rectification section to the stripping section. The distillation column further being in connection with a condenser and a reboiler; and a distillate stream, a side drawn stream, and a bottoms stream.

Purification of mercaptans or thiophenes using dividing wall column distillation

Aspects of the invention relate to systems and processes for recovering methanesulfonic acid, in a purified form, from a composition additionally including sulfur trioxide. In accordance with one aspect, the invention provides a process that includes separating a feed stream comprised of hydrocarbons, methanesulfonic acid, sulfur trioxide, and optionally sulfuric acid to produce a light stream comprised of hydrocarbons and a heavy stream comprised of methanesulfonic acid and sulfur trioxide; contacting (e.g., by mixing) the heavy stream with a reactive additive capable of reacting with sulfur trioxide, under conditions effective to cause reaction of the reactive additive with the sulfur trioxide to produce a heavy reaction product having a boiling point higher than the boiling point of methanesulfonic acid; and separating the heavy stream using a distillation column to produce a distillate stream consisting essentially of methanesulfonic acid and a bottoms stream comprising the heavy reaction product.

A method of producing an organopolysulfide or salt thereof is provided which includes a step of mixing an organomonosulfide or salt thereof and elemental sulfur, wherein the mixing is carried out at a temperature not greater than 95 C and in the absence of any added liquid phase for a time effective to produce the organopolysulfide or salt thereof. Methods for the electrolytic preparation of tin coated metals are disclosed. Organic polybasic acids, such as methanedisulfonic acid [CH2(SO3H)2], 1,3-acetonedisulfonic acid [CO(CH2SO3H)2], anhydrides, and their water soluble salts, and mixtures thereof may be used as the electrolyte in the plating process or as the flux in the reflow process. The invention provides methods for the conversion of alkyl alkanesulfonate esters of the formula RSOR' to the corresponding acids of the formula RSOH. The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of substituted alkanesulfonates by the reaction of an aqueous metal substituted 2-hydroxyethanesulfonate with a nucleophile. 2-Alkylaminoalkanesulfonate is formed when the nucleophile is an amine. The invention also relates to the optimization of reaction conditions to produce an optimum yield.

Preparation of substituted alkanesulfonates from 2-hydroxyalkanesulfonates

A procedure for the generation of organosulfonic acids from solutions of corresponding metal organosulfonate compounds by electrowinning, electrolytically driven hydrolysis or chemically driven hydrolysis is described. Appropriate organosulfonate compounds include the water soluble salts of alkanesulfonic and aromatic sulfonic acids which incorporate metals from Group VIB, VIIB, VIIIB, IB, IIB or VA of the periodic table. The electrowinning and electrolytic techniques described can be applied in divided or undivided cells and can be operated in continuous fashion to provide the greatest efficiency. Hydrolysis based methods can employ either anodic oxidation or oxidation both of which function to oxidize the metal cation(s) present to hydrolytically unstable higher oxidation states.

Generation of organosulfonic acid from its salts

A method is disclosed for the preparation of alkanesulfonamide containing low amounts of ammonium or alkylammonium-salt impurities wherein alkanesulfonamide is treated with a base to convert ammonium or alkylammonium-salt impurities to their corresponding base salts and to liberate neutral amine or ammonia.
