Substituted hydroxylamines useful in photographic processing solution can be prepared by reacting a hydroxylamine with a vinylic compound having an electron withdrawing substituent in a suitable solvent, in the absence of a neutralizing base. The resulting products can be used without isolation from the reaction solution.

A photographic element containing a dye which when released from a coupler has a sufficiently low pKa, generally less than about 5, such that the dye remains substantially or fully ionized during coating of the film and in the produced film, results in an element containing a dye which has the desired hue without the use of additional additives, such as mordants, to keep the dye ionized. The dye is also useful in photographic elements without release from a coupler, for example, as a filter dye.

A novel blocked photographically useful compound element and process are based on a new blocking group that comprises a beta-ketocarbonyl group that is part of a 5- to 7-member heterocyclic ring containing a hetero-atom not adjacent to the beta-ketocarbonyl group. Such a blocked photographically useful compound provides a photographic material and process enabling more rapid release of the photographically useful group upon processing.

A novel blocked photographically useful compound comprises a new blocking group that (a) comprises two electrophilic groups, the least electrophilic of which is bonded directly or through a timing group to the photographically useful group (PUG) of the compound, (b) is capable of reacting with a dinucleophile reagent, and (c) has the two electrophilic groups separated from each other by a bond or unsubstituted or substituted atom that enables nucleophilic displacement to occur with release of PUG when the compound is reacted with a dinucleophile reagent. Such a blocked photographically useful compound is useful in a photographic material and process to provide increased stability and enable more rapid release of the photographically useful group upon reaction with a dinucleophile reagent.

The present invention is directed to a process of precipitating for use in photography a thin tabular grain silver bromide or bromoiodide emulsion within a novel range of low bromide ion concentrations (high pBr levels) at the nucleation stage. A dye useful for absorbing infrared radiation in photographic elements, having the structure: ##STR1## is disclosed. In this formula R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each independently represents sulfoalkyl, carboxyalkyl, or sulfatoalkyl of from 3 to 6 carbon atoms, having at least 3 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain between the nitrogen atom of each Z ring and the sulfo or sulfato group, and at least 2 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain between the nitrogen atom of each Z ring and the carboxy group. R.sub.3 and R.sub.5 are each hydrogen or together represent the atoms necessary to complete 5- or 6-membered carbocyclic ring, and R.sub.4 represents hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, aryl, cyano, halogen, or ##STR2## where R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 each independently represents alkyl of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or aryl, or together represent the non-metallic atoms necessary to form a 5- or 6-membered ring. X.sym. represents a cation. Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 each independently represent the atoms needed to complete an indole, naphthindole or benzindole nucleus.
