A signal quality detector (200) determines the quality of an incoming received data signal within a communication device (100). The audio output of the communication device is muted and unmuted according to the decision of the signal quality detector (200). The signal quality detector (200) allows the threshold length of an invalid bit period (210), along with the number of invalid bit periods detected (220), to be used to vary the decision sensitivity of the detector.

Method and apparatus for signal quality detection in a communication

A noise detector (56, 56'), suitable for use in a radio frequency (RF) communications device, such as a CT-2 base station (12) or handset (20), detects a broken RF link by sampling the energy level of a signal for a short period of time. Thus, the audio signal output to a telco interface (40) of the base station (12) or the speaker (60) of the handset (20) can be muted by a signal from the controller (48, 48') in response to broken link detect by the noise detector (56, 56'). The radio communications device (12, 20) receives an RF signal via receiver circuitry (50, 50b), samples (106, 114, 116) the received signal over a predetermined time period (N) to measure a plurality of signal energy levels (112), and determines whether the RF link is broken or not in response to an average of the plurality of signal energy levels exceeding or not exceeding a predetermined threshold (118).

A base site circuit (38) for operating in a communication system (10) having a plurality of base sites capable of allocating a communication channel for use by a communication unit (16) in response to a communication channel request from the communication unit. The base site circuit includes a receiver (34) that operates in a low sensitivity mode when there are no communication channel requests received, and that operates in a high sensitivity mode which is activated by a control signal. The base site further includes a transmitter (34) which is activated by the control signal and a control circuit (32) coupled to both the receiver and the transmitter, for controlling the receiver and the transmitter. The present invention comprises a method and apparatus for selecting one of at least two antennas (202, 204) in a communication unit (102) for use in a wireless communication system (100). A signal is received by a radio frequency receiver (208) during a receiving period from one of the at least two antennas (202, 204) currently selected by an antenna switch (206), the signal transmitted in a digital communications format comprising a plurality of valid data patterns and having an invalid data pattern that is not transmitted. The number of data patterns in the signal received that comprise the invalid data pattern is determined by an antenna diversity control circuit (222), and for a subsequent receiving period one of the at least two antennas (202, 204) is selected based upon the number of occurrences of the invalid data pattern determined.

A radio telephone communication system (200) having a base station (203) including at least one frequency agile time division duplex transceiver (207) for facilitating communication with at lest one radio telephone (100) on the at least one radio frequency channel. The radio telephone (100) scans a plurality of channels capable of being generated by the at least one frequency agile transceiver (207) to find an available channel and provide an indication representing a base station busy status when all the at least one frequency agile transceivers are in use. A base station busy status is indicated when one of a bidirectional time division duplex communication including a base station identification signal is being communicated by the at least one frequency agile transceiver or a unidirectional time division duplex communication including a base station identification signal is being communicated by the at least one frequency agile transceiver (207).

A method and apparatus are provided for synchronizing over-the-air time division duplexing communication within a defined geographical coverage area (201) of a communication system (200) that provides at least cordless radiotelephone operation between a plurality of portable radiotelephone transceivers and a plurality of telepoint base stations (202, 204, 206) geographically located within the coverage area (201). The communication system (200) transmits over-the-air a synchronization timing signal (203) including timing information corresponding to a transmit-and-receive duty cycle timing for time division duplexing communication. At least one telepoint base station (204, 206) within the coverage area (201) receives the synchronization timing signal (203). The at least one telepoint base station (204, 206) synchronizes its over-the-air time division duplexing communication transmit-and-receive duty cycle timing to the timing information.

Method and apparatus for synchronizing a time division duplexing

A radio telephone communication system (200) comprising a base station with at least one frequency agile transceiver (207) capable of time division duplex operation on at least one radio frequency channel. The base station operates to facilitate communication with at least one radio telephone (100) on the at least one radio frequency channel. The radio telephone communication system further comprises a radio telephone (100) capable of determining an acquisition status of the at least one frequency agile transceiver in the base station, the radio telephone (100) generating an indication representing a base station busy status (402) when one of: requesting a time division duplex communication link fails and bidirectional time division duplex communication is exists on the radio frequency channel; and requesting a time division duplex communication link fails and unidirectional time division duplex communication exists on the radio frequency channel and the unidirectional time division duplex communication originates from the base station.

This radio communication system includes a plurality of remote base stations or callpoints. When an incoming call is to be directed to a cordless telephone, the identifying information for the cordless telephone, along with a call back number or ID is transmitted as by a paging signal by a PABX. Each of the base stations includes a paging receiver for receiving the information. If the base station has a line available it initiates a call to the cordless telephone. A base station that locates the cordless telephone would provide the connection for the call. By calling the PABX utilizing the call back ID, the base station can complete the call.

A paging controller for a paging communication system exchanges information by a global multiplexed bus arrangement. The bus arrangement permits voice, data and control information to be exchanged between a common memory and a plurality of I/O modules in a common communication bus. The timing signals of the bus arrangement including the I/O modules are synchronized to expeditiously exchange information among the modules. In operation, each module has a preassigned address representative of a sequence number in a predetermined succession order to permit each module to access the bus.
