The method of the present invention is performed by providing a glass sheet having first and second opposite surfaces merging with each other along a peripheral ground angled surface setting-off with the glass sheet first surface an included angle substantially greater than normal. The glass sheet is placed in a mold having opposing cavity portions which collectively define a cavity including a peripheral edge cavity portion defined in part by a cavity defining surface which lies in the plane of the glass sheet first surface when the mold is closed. The mold is then closed such that the cavity defining surface and the glass sheet round angled surface set-off and angled complementary to the included angle and with the glass sheet per surface abutting the cavity defining surface inboard of the glass sheet ground angled surface. Polymeric/copolymeric synthetic plastic material is injected into the peripheral cavity portion to completely encapsulate the glass sheet periphery with a border, frame or encapsulation having a first exterior surface coplanar with the glass sheet first surface whereby the latter two surfaces are &ldquo;flush-to-front&rdquo; and the glass sheet periphery is in undercut interlocked relationship with the injection molded border.

Method of manufacturing an interlocked, &ldquo;flush-to-front,&rdquo; injection molded border and glass sheet

An article of manufacture, such as an encapsulated dual lens sealed instrument cover, includes four components, namely, a first lens having a peripheral edge encapsulated by a polymeric/polymeric injection molded encapsulation or border and a second lens also have a peripheral edge encapsulated by a second injection molded polymeric/copolymeric encapsulation or border. A hermetic chamber is thereby formed between the two lenses. The first encapsulation is also provided with threads or similar fastening means to readily secure the instrument cover to an instrument &ldquo;can&rdquo; containing any variety of instruments, such as a nautical compass, amperage/voltage, fuel, etc. The first lens is inserted into a cavity of a mold and the first encapsulation is injection molded thereabout. The latter two components are then assembled with respect to the second lens and the second encapsulation is injection molded thereabout. This double injection molding process to manufacture the dual lens sealed instrument cover creates &ldquo;anti-fog&rdquo; characteristics and allows more rapid and cost-effective manufacturing than heretofore provided by conventional techniques utilizing metal crimping and sealing techniques.

Method of manufacturing an encapsulated, dual lens, sealed instrument cover

A peripherally encapsulated unit is manufactured by molding a peripheral encapsulation of a predetermined internal peripheral contour and internal peripheral size from hot polymeric material in a mold. The mold is opened and a member is positioned in internal relationship to the hot molded peripheral encapsulation. Thereafter, the hot molded peripheral encapsulation shrinks as it cools to reduce its internal peripheral size thereby unitizing the peripheral encapsulation with a peripheral edge portion of the member to form a peripherally encapsulated unit, such as a cook top, range door, &ldquo;touch&rdquo; control panel, or the like.

A serving tray includes a tempered glass panel of a predetermined peripheral configuration defined by a substantially continuous peripheral edge bounded by a one-piece injection molded polymeric/copolymeric synthetic plastic material encapsulation. The encapsulation includes upper and lower leg portions and a bight portion therebetween with an upper surface of the panel and the upper leg portion being in peripheral liquid-tight sealed engagement to define a liquid dam therebetween. Legs projecting beyond the lower leg portions space a lowermost decorative surface of the glass panel away from an adjacent stacked panel or an underlying supporting surface.

Serving tray

A cooktop, hob top or the like includes a cooktop, hob top panel having a peripheral edge portion, a frame bordering the same and a substantially one-piece homogeneous injection molded polymeric/copolymeric encapsulation securing the peripheral edge portion of the panel to the frame. The encapsulation includes integral fasteners adapted to be inserted into openings of a horizontal flange of a range, countertop or the like.
