An electrical plug connector is matable with a pin header and includes a molded plug housing with multiple contact apertures extending between a mating face and a rear face. Angularly spaced ribs extend into the contact receiving aperture to support each contact. Each rib is opposed to molded pawls that are deflectable when a contact is inserted from the rear of the housing. The ribs and the pawls are located at different angularly spaced intervals so that they do not overlap and so that the one piece housing can be molded in a straight pull manner. An annular retaining section on each contact is held between the pawls and the ribs when each contact is fully inserted into a corresponding aperture.

Electrical connector assembly

A mated assembly (100) includes a sealed connector subassembly (10), a cap housing (20), a contact retention insert (30), a wire seal (40), a seal cover (50), a jack screw (60), and a header housing (70). Jack screw (60) is used to matably join the subassembly (10) with the header (70). Subassembly (10) comprises a cap housing (20) which includes a cavity (23) wherein the contact retention insert (30) is disposed along with a blanket type seal (40) for receiving electrical contacts that will electrically mate with respective pins of contact array (72). Wire guide (80) includes latching legs (89) for latchable engagement with wire guide mounts (29) of cap housing (20) thereby allowing proper wire guiding of the wires exiting from the subassembly (10). The wire guide (80) advantageously includes reinforcement structures (84,85) and a bolt access tower (83) for allowing an operator to operate jackscrew (60) with a tool.

A mated assembly (100) includes a sealed connector subassembly (10), a cap housing (20), a contact retention insert (30), a wire seal (40), a seal cover (50), a jack screw (60), and a header housing (70). Jack screw (60) is used to matably join the subassembly (10) with the header (70). Subassembly (10) comprises a cap housing (20) which includes a cavity (23) wherein the contact retention insert (30) is disposed along with a blanket type seal (40) for receiving electrical contacts that will electrically mate with respective pins of contact array (72). The contact retention insert (30) is advantageously connected to the cap housing (20) by way of insert retaining clip (32), and the bolt (60) is free to rotate but is axially trapped within cap housing (20) between washer (61) and bolt retaining clip (63).

An electrical connector assembly includes two mating multiposition electrical connector halves 2, 4 and an insert 10 which is positioned in engagement with the terminals 8 in one of the connector halves. The insert is fabricated from a lead frame 16 which is secured between an insulative substrate 40 and a cover 48. Portions of the lead frame 16 extending into slots 44 and channels 52 on the substrate and cover are punched out to separate connecting tabs 26 from ground buses 18, 20, 22. Surface mount capacitors 38 are soldered to both the solder tab sections 30 on the connecting tabs and to solder contact sections 34 on the ground buses. The insert 10 is then positioned on the terminals 8 on one connector half with the tines 32 in a terminal socket 28 on each connecting tab 26 engaging the terminals 8.

Filtering insert for electrical connectors

A shorting contact for an electrical system has a first circuit body having at least one shorting spring and a second circuit body having at least one shorting spring. The circuit bodies are mounted adjacent and opposite one another internally in a plug housing so that the shorting springs may contact one another to form an electrical connection. The respective circuit bodies are each in electrical connection with respective socket contacts. A header to be mated to the plug housing has a rib formed thereon. When the header is mated to the plug housing the rib extends through a slot in a spacer between the header and the plug housing and the rib contacts the shorting springs and separates the shorting springs to open the electrical circuit.

Shorting spring concept

A member (13) with a shorting contact (14) thereon is disposed in a receptacle housing (11). The shorting contact (14) is in mating electrical contact with an interface (15). When a header (12) is inserted into the receptacle housing (11), an inclined portion (29) of a beam (28) formed on the header (12) deflects the shorting contact (14) and opens the electrical circuit between the shorting contact (14) and the interface (15). Male pin contacts (25) in the header (12) electrically engage female contacts (21) within the receptacle housing (11) before the shorting circuit is broken. When the header (12) is removed from the receptacle housing (11) the shorting circuit is closed before electrical contact is opened between the male pin contacts (25) and the female contacts (21). In this manner, spurious signals are prevented. Extension means (32) extending from the sides of the beam (28) are disposed between the shorting contacts ( 14) and the interfaces (15) assuring the opening of the shorting circuit when the header (12) is inserted in the receptacle housing (11).

Electrical shorting system

An insulation displacement terminal having a pair of slotted plates retained in a nest formed by embossments on sidewalls extending past the edges of slotted plates. The sidewalls and the slotted plates are formed orthogonally upward from a common base. Outer ellipsoidal embossments are formed on opposite sides of a cylindrical embossment. The embossments are formed by a shallow drawing process without removal of material from the planar sidewalls. Adjacent edges of the embossments are sheared to form a nest receiving the side edges of the slotted plates.

A connector for interconnecting a zig-zag inline package to a printed circuit board has a plurality of contacts in two parallel and offset rows. The contacts are dimensionally controlled to be preloaded only when installed in the housing cavity, providing predictable preload and resultant insertion force. The connector also includes a decoupling capacitor, integral with the contacts which contact the power and ground lead of the integrated circuit package.

A connector for interconnecting a zig-zag inline package to a printed circuit board has a plurality of contacts in two parallel and offset rows. The contacts and housing are dimensionally controlled to be preloaded only when installed in the housing cavity, providing predictable preload and resultant insertion force. The connector also includes a decoupling capacitor, integral with the contacts which contact the power and ground lead of the integrated circuit packages.

A socket connector suitable for use in establishing interconnection to a plurality of closely spaced surface pad portions of traces on a circuit panel is disclosed. This socket connector is suitable for use with a high density single in-line memory module. The individual terminals are edge stamped from a spring metal blank and inserted in closely spaced centerlines and cavities in the housing. Insertion of a circuit panel edgewise into the connector biases the terminals outwardly with the stresses primarily confined to the plane of the spring metal blank. The terminals are inserted from above and positively retained within the housing. Low insertion forces, together with a wiping action between the terminals and the surface pad portions of traces on the circuit panel is achieved.

High density circuit panel socket

Terminals for a socket connector suitable for use in establishing interconnection to a plurality of closely spaced surface pad portions of traces on a circuit panel are disclosed. This socket connector is suitable for use with a high density single in-line memory module. The individual terminals are edge stamped from a spring metal blank and inserted in closely spaced centerlines and cavities in the housing. Insertion of a circuit panel edgewise into the connector biases the terminals outwardly with the stresses primarily confined to the plane of the spring metal blank. The terminals are inserted from above and positively retained within the housing. Low insertion forces, together with a wiping action between the terminals and the surface pad portions of traces on the circuit panel is achieved.

Sockets specifically adapted for burn-in testing of small outline integrated circuit components are disclosed. The multicontact sockets have terminals located in cavities oriented to receive the small outline integrated circuit leads. The terminals are located between adjacent leads and are positioned to resiliently engage the interstitial edges of the package leads, thus imparting minimal stress normal to the plane of the leads. Both surface mount and through-hole sockets are disclosed and the terminals as depicted can have a bowed leaf spring configuration or a preloaded flat terminal, arcuately deformed for retention within the housing cavities. Thus the small outline integrated circuit components can be routinely inserted into the sockets for test purposes. The sockets can also be used in a conventional manner to socket integrated circuit components such as SOICs on a printed circuit board.

Socket for a surface mount DIP comprises a housing having two rows of elongate contacts in respective apertures extending between package receiving face and opposed mounting face. Apertures intersect channels in sidewalls of nest in package receiving face forming channels which receive feet extending laterally of package. Contacts are formed with leaf springs which engage feet in channels.

The present invention relates to a device used in testing and analyzing a printed circuit board and further for determining optimum chip functionality. More particularly, the device includes a rigid plate to which four flat flexible film strips are attached such that upon mounting the plate in a connector on the board, the traces on the film are in electrical contact with traces and electronic devices on the board through the contact elements in the connector. The other ends of the four film strips may be terminated to any variety of connectors to carry the electrical signals to testing and analyzing equipment.

The invention disclosed herein relates to a contact element having upwardly extending, spaced apart arms capable of being twisted about a horizontal axis to provide torsional forces and converging fingers extending laterally from the arms to receive between the free ends a pin or lead from an electronic package or device to establish electrical contact therebetween. The free ends of the fingers, being spaced apart a distance less than the pin diameter or lead thickness, exert compressive forces against the pin or lead which, along with the torsional forces being exerted by the arms, provides an enhanced electrical contact.
