An oligomer, uncured polymer or cured polymer comprising the reaction product of one or more polyfunctional compounds containing two or more cyclopentadienone groups and at least one polyfunctional compound containing two or more aromatic acetylene groups wherein at least some of the polyfunctional compounds contain three or more reactive groups. Such oligomers and uncured polymers may be cured to form cured polymers which are useful as dielectrics in the microelectronics industry, especially for dielectrics in integrated circuits.

A functional fluid composition comprises a homogeneous mixture of diphenyl ether and benzophenone and at least one additional component selected from the group consisting of dibenzofuran and naphthalene. In a more specific embodiment, a functional fluid composition comprises a homogeneous mixture of diphenyl ether employed in an amount from about 5 to about 80 weight percent, benzophenone employed in an amount from about 5 to about 50 weight percent, and at least one additional component selected from the group consisting of dibenzofuran and naphthalene employed in an amount from about 5 to about 25 weight percent, the diphenyl ether, the benzophenone, and the at least one additional functional fluid composition is thermally stable up to at least about 650.degree. F. and has a freezing point of less than about 54.degree. F.

Water and organic low-boiling constituents in organic heat transfer fluids used to heat commercial processes are removed by introducing a gas such as nitrogen into a turbulent flow of the heat transfer fluid and separating gas which then contains low-boiling constituents from the heat transfer fluid of the heat transfer system. The gas containing low-boiling constituents may be sent to a condenser to return heat transfer fluid which also vaporizes into the gas, but to a lesser extent than the low-boilers, to the heat transfer system. The gas containing low-boiling constituents is then combusted.

Water and organic low-boiling constituents in a organic heat transfer fluids used to heat commercial processes are removed by counter current stripping the fluid with a gas such as nitrogen. The gas containing low-boiling constituents is sent to a rectification column and condenser to return heat transfer fluid which also vaporizes into the gas, but to a lesser extent than the low-boilers, to the heat transfer system.

The invention is a process to recover 4-phenoxybiphenyl from a phenoxybiphenyl mixture which includes at least 30% by weight of 4-phenoxybiphenyl, the balance being 2-phenoxybiphenyl, 3-phenoxybiphenyl and a minor amount of other compounds. The process involves recrystallizing 4-phenoxybiphenyl as a solid in a single recrystallization step from a solution formed from the mixture and an alcohol solvent. The recovered solid has a 4-phenoxybiphenyl content of at least about 85% by weight of recovered solid and a yield of at least 40% based on the amount of 4-phenoxybiphenyl in the mixture.

Wide range heat-transfer fluids can be made by mixing methyl and/or ethyl biphenyls with diethylbenzenes. The fluids can be used at temperatures down to -20.degree. F. (-29.degree. C.).

Heat-transfer fluid

Monomeric and polymeric triarylsulfonium complex salts which may be prepared by contacting diarylsulfoxides or polymeric arylsulfoxides with aromatic compounds in the presence of an organosulfonic acid are described. An example is tris-(4-phenoxyphenyl)sulfonium methane sulfonate prepared by reaction of bis-(4-phenoxyphenyl)sulfoxide, diphenyl ether and methane sulfonic acid. The compounds demonstrate useful corrosion inhibiting properties.

An aqueous cleaning composition is described herein which contains glyoxylic acid dissolved in an aqueous non-oxidizing acid. This cleaning solution is effective in removing acid-soluble, sulfide-containing scale from metal surfaces (e.g. refinery equipment) without the evolution of gaseous hydrogen sulfide.

A cross-linked polymer of a monovinylidene aromatic compound is diacylaminoalkylated by contacting said polymer with an aldehyde and a diacylamine in the presence of an acid catalyst. The resulting diacylaminoalkylated polymer is readily hydrolyzed to an aminoalkylated form which is useful as a weak base ion exchange resin and as a precursor in the preparation of other ion exchange resins. For example, reacting a cross-linked polystyrene with paraformaldehyde and phthalimide in the presence of sulfuric acid and subsequently hydrolyzing the reaction product forms a cross-linked poly(aminomethyl styrene) useful as a weak base ion exchange resin and as a precursor in the preparation of strong base or chelate type resins.
