Coating compositions are disclosed having a non-bisphenol A based film forming resin and an adhesion promoter resin. The coating compositions provide an alternate to epoxy resins that still allow melamine formaldehyde free cure, blush resistance, capability to retort and can withstand hard-to-hold beverages. In some embodiments, the coating compositions are used to coat substrates such as cans and packaging materials for the storage of food and beverages. Substrates can be coated by preparing an adhesion promoter composition by a method including mixing an epoxidized resin and a solvent to form a mixture, adding a phosphoric acid compound to the resulting mixture to form a phosphate ester, adding water to partially hydrolyze the phosphate ester, and adding a neutralizer to form the adhesion promoter resin, followed by blending the adhesion promoter resin with a non-bisphenol A based film forming resin to form a coating composition, and applying the coating composition to the substrate.

Radiation curable coating compositions are disclosed. In some embodiments, the coating compositions are used to coat substrates such as packaging materials and the like for the storage of food and beverages. The coating compositions may have a (meth)acrylate functional polyether polyol prepared by reacting an epoxidized vegetable oil in the presence of a phosphoric acid compound to form an epoxy phosphate, and reacting the epoxy phosphate with a hydroxyl functional (meth)acrylate in the presence of an acid catalyst to form the (meth)acrylate functional polyether polyol.

Latex emulsions are disclosed which can be used in the formation of coating compositions that are not water sensitive, have good blush resistance and retortability. In some embodiments, the coating compositions are used to coat substrates such as cans and packaging materials for the storage of food and beverages. Coating compositions can be prepared by mixing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer component and a stabilizer comprising a strong acid, in a carrier to form a monomer emulsion, reacting the monomer emulsion with an initiator to form the latex emulsion, and reacting the latex emulsion with a neutralizer. Methods of coating substrates with the coating compositions, and substrates coated with the coating compositions are also disclosed. The latex emulsions can be prepared by mixing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer component and a stabilizer comprising a strong acid, in a carrier to form a monomer emulsion, and reacting the monomer emulsion with an initiator to form the latex emulsion, wherein the stabilizer is present in an amount from about 0.1 to about 2.0 by weight polymeric solids.
