Ostomy appliances with a filter system that is resistant to clogging by waste expelled by the stoma are provided for waste management.

Ostomy pouch filter system

A medical device according to certain embodiments generally includes a first wall, a second wall, and a first deformable reinforcing member. The first wall and the second wall are joined to one another such that a cavity is formed between the first wall and the second wall. The cavity has an outlet opening formed at a proximal end of the medical device. The first deformable reinforcing member is attached to the first wall, and is deformable by manual application of pressure to lateral edges of the first deformable reinforcing member so as to radially distend the outlet opening. The first deformable reinforcing member includes at least one first notch formed in at least one lateral edge thereof. Each notch is configured to receive a portion of a user's digit to facilitate manual application of pressure to said lateral edges.

A coupling assembly for fastening an adhesive wafer to an ostomy appliance device, the coupling assembly including a captive connection between the adhesive wafer and ostomy appliance that permits captive relative displacement between the entire adhesive wafer and the entrance aperture of the appliance, to facilitate access to the wafer from the non-body-contacting side. The coupling assembly further comprises a fixation coupling for fixing the adhesive wafer in the operative position.

Ostomy pouch appliance

Described herein is a medical device with an opening system. The medical device is foldable from an open to a closed condition. It is secured in its closed condition. In certain embodiments, the medical device is an ostomy pouch.

An ostomy coupling is disclosed comprising a floatable coupling part. The coupling part is supported with respect to an adhesive wafer by means of a flexible support collar that permits displacement of the coupling part in a floatable manner. The flexible collar comprises plastics film and has bistable shapes. The collar is configured to hold the coupling part stably in (i) an extended position spaced from the adhesive wafer, to facilitate an ostomate to manually brace the coupling part in order to relieve the attachment force when an ostomy appliance is press fitted to the coupling part, and (ii) in a retracted position close to the adhesive wafer.

Ostomy appliance

An adapter is disclosed for an ostomy coupling. The adapter provides a floatable coupling characteristic to an ostomy body fitment that has a non-floatable coupling part. The adapter comprises a first coupling part for attaching to the non-floating coupling part of the body fitment, a second coupling part for releasably attaching to an ostomy appliance, and a flexible collar between the first and second coupling parts. The flexible collar permits the second coupling part to be displaced away from the first coupling part, thereby creating a space for an ostomate to manually brace the second coupling part against an attachment force when an appliance is fitted.

Adaptor for ostomy coupling

The pouch is formed of first and second thin barrier film walls welded along the periphery to form a waste receptacle. One wall has an inlet defined by an attachment ring. The ring mounts the pouch on an adhesive faceplate adapted to adhere to the skin surrounding the stoma. A membrane, formed of material which is gas permeable but transmits little moisture and no liquid, is situated between the walls to separate the receptacle into an inlet chamber, where solids, liquid and most moisture are retained, and an outlet chamber into which gas and a small amount of vapor passes. A filter is provided to permit the gas to exit the outlet chamber. A first section of superabsorbent material isolates the filter from the outlet chamber. By absorbing any moisture in the gas before it contacts the filter, blockage of the filter is prevented. A second section of superabsorbant material is provided near the bottom of the output chamber to absorb moisture which otherwise may cause the membrane to stick to the pouch wall, resulting in a substantial reduction of the gas transmissibility of the membrane.

The hydrocolloid disk includes a polyethylene/PVDC film backing. The disk adheres to the acrylic adhesive layer of the collar over a large portion of the surface area of the disk. The collar is formed of a EVA/polyethylene perforated film on a polyethylene non-woven. In the one piece embodiment, the collar is secured directly to the pouch. In the two piece embodiment, the collar is secured directly to the coupling ring. Increased strength, better odor protection and improved breathability are achieved.
