An orthopaedic joint prosthesis assembly includes a head part of an orthopaedic joint prosthesis component and an alignment guide. The head part has a spherical bearing surface for articulation with a corresponding joint surface, and an assembly surface having a first bore formed in it for receiving a spigot on another part of the orthopaedic joint prosthesis. The bore has a first axis that extends perpendicular to the assembly surface. The alignment guide has an axial portion defining a second axis and an arm extending from the axial portion. The arm includes a distal portion which is configured to engage the assembly surface, with the axial portion being arranged to engage the bearing surface of the head part when the head part is mounted within the guide such that an impaction force applied along the second axis is directed along the first axis.

Alignment guide

A surgical device () for extraction of a prosthetic component from a patient during surgery. The surgical device comprises a first component () having a female coupling portion at a first end, and a second end configured to be connected to one of a prosthetic component or a surgical extraction instrument. The first component further includes a retainer. The surgical device further comprises a second component () with a first end defining a male coupling portion, a stem () extending from the male coupling portion, and a second end configured to be connected to the other of the prosthetic component or the surgical extraction instrument. The male coupling portion of the second component is configured to be disposed within the female coupling portion of the first component and retained within the female coupling portion by the retainer, with the stem of the second component extending away from the female coupling portion of the first component. The male coupling portion of the second component and the retainer of the first component are configured such that the male coupling portion is held in the female coupling portion while allowing articulation of the first component relative to the second component. The first and second components form an articulating joint allowing a user to connect the surgical extraction instrument to the prosthetic component in a patient, articulate a portion of the surgical extraction instrument which resides external from the operating site, and transfer extraction forces to enable removal of the prosthetic component from the patient.

Prosthesis extraction system

An orthopaedic joint prosthesis assembly includes a head part of an orthopaedic joint prosthesis component and an alignment guide. The head part has a spherical hearing surface for articulation with a corresponding joint surface, and an assembly surface having a first bore formed in it for receiving a spigot on another part of the orthopaedic joint prosthesis. The bore has a first axis that extends perpendicular to the assembly surface. The alignment guide has an axial portion defining a second axis and an arm extending from the axial portion. The arm includes a distal portion which is configured to engage the assembly surface, with the axial portion being arranged to engage the bearing surface of the head part when the head part is mounted within the guide such that an impaction force applied along the second axis is directed along the first axis.

A kit of parts for inserting a deformable implant into a cavity in a bone of a patient is described. An inserter instrument comprises a body having a cavity extending along a longitudinal axis from a distal end to a proximal end. An attachment mechanism is provided at the distal end and to which a deformable implant can be releasably attached. A drive mechanism is provided at the proximal end of the body. An insertion stop is mounted on the body and arranged to control the depth of insertion of the inserter instrument into a guide tube. A push rod is freely and slidably arranged within the cavity and has a distal end engageable with a part of the deformable implant and a proximal end abutable by the drive mechanism. The drive mechanism is operable to drive the push rod toward the distal end of the body. The kit also includes an impactor dimensioned for slidable engagement within the cavity.

Implant inserter assembly

The invention provides an impactor for transmitting an assembly force to a component of an orthopaedic implant. The impactor has first and second telescoping parts which are biased apart by means of a main spring. The main spring is compressed when an assembly force is applied to the parts. An indicator is latched against movement until it is released when the extent of the compression of the main spring by the application of an assembly force exceeds a threshold. The indicator then moves to provide the user with an indication that a minimum assembly force has been applied.

Impactor

A device and method for inserting a liner into an acetabular cup. The device includes a first portion configured to engage the liner and a rim of the acetabular cup to align a pole of the liner and a pole of the cup along an axis of the device prior to insertion of the liner into the cup. The device also includes a second portion for pushing the liner into the cup. The second portion includes a guide arrangement for engaging a rim of the liner. The second portion is coupled to the first portion for movement of the second portion with respect to the first portion along said axis.

Device and method for inserting a liner into an acetabular cup

An apparatus and method for measuring a version angle of a restored neck of a femur during a hip replacement procedure. The apparatus includes a broach. The broach has a distal end that is insertable into a medullary canal of the neck of the femur. The broach also has a proximal end that extends along a neck axis of the broach. The apparatus also includes a protractor. The protractor includes a rod which is attachable to the proximal end of the broach to extend away from the neck axis of the broach for measuring the version angle of the restored neck of the femur relative to a vertical direction. The method includes inserting the broach, flexing the knee at approximately ninety degrees, orienting the tibia vertically, attaching the protractor to the proximal end of the broach and using it to measure the version angle.

Version protractor

A kit of parts for inserting a deformable implant into a cavity in a bone of a patient is described. An inserter instrument () comprises a body () having a cavity extending along a longitudinal axis from a distal end to a proximal end. An attachment mechanism () is provided at the distal end and to which a deformable implant can be releasably attached. A drive mechanism () is provided at the proximal end of the body. A push rod () is freely and slidably arranged within the cavity and has a distal end engageable with a part of the deformable implant and a proximal end abutable by the drive mechanism. The drive mechanism is operable to drive the push rod toward the distal end of the body. The kit also includes an impactor () dimensioned for slidable engagement within the cavity.

Surgical instruments

An alignment guide is described that includes a shaft having a longitudinal axis and a housing attachable to the shaft and rotatable about a first axis that is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. A guide arm the extends from the housing at a predetermined angle along a second axis. A spirit level is connected to the housing on a plane aligned with the predetermined angle.

An alignment guide is provided having a shaft with a longitudinal axis and a guide arm having a first portion, a second portion and a third portion. The first portion is attached to the shaft and configured to be rotatable about a first axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. The second portion extends from the first portion at a first predetermined angle along a second axis. The third portion extends from the second portion at a second predetermined angle.

A method of aligning an alignment guide relative to a reamed acetabulum of a patient is provided. The method includes the step of manipulating an alignment guide comprising a shaft having a longitudinal axis and a guide arm having a first portion, a second portion and a third portion, the first portion attached to the shaft and configured to be rotatable about a first axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the second portion extending from the first portion at a first predetermined angle along a second axis, and the third portion extending from the second portion at a second predetermined angle. The guide arm is rotated about the first axis relative to the shaft. A cup or trial is attached to the distal end of the shaft and positioned to contact the reamed acetabulum. The third portion of the guide arm is then oriented with respect to the long axis of the patient and the surface of the table on which the patient is positioned.

Method of using an alignment guide

An instrument for removing tissue from a bone to create a cavity consists of an approximately spherical body having cutting formations in its external surface for cutting a bone. The body has a connector by which it can be connected to a drive by which it can be rotated about an axis, and a recess at the pole, opposite the connector. When the instrument is applied to the surface of a bone and is rotated about its axis, bone is cut as a result of the action of the formations against the bone, and a circular region of bone adjacent to the polar recess in the body remains generally intact.

Instrument for removing tissue

A support structure implant for location within a bone cavity to support the bone which defines the cavity is formed from wires by braiding in a machine direction from a first end of the structure towards an opposite second end. The wires are formed into loops at the first end of the structure so that two lengths of wire extend away from each loop and a reformed into the braid. Each of the wires which is formed into the braid is held at the second end of the structure in a clamp. The clamp is provided by a support ring and a clamp ring which is formed from a shape memory alloy which can shrink to clamp the wires against the support ring when heated.

Support structure implant for a bone cavity

A support structure implant for location within a bone cavity to support the bone which defines the cavity is formed from interlaced wires which extend from a first end of the structure towards an opposite second end. The wires are formed into loops at the first end of the structure. The structure includes a clip having a plurality of fingers which extend through the loops to control the spacing between the loops.

An instrument for removing tissue from a bone to create a cavity which is approximately circular in outline in which tissue within a predetermined region within the circular outline is left relatively undisturbed. The instrument includes a rotational drive unit which oscillates through an angle &#x3b1;. A cutting head can be connected to the drive unit to cause the head to rotate.
