An apparatus comprises a first number of splines located near a first end of a first joint section and a second number of splines located near a second end of a second joint section. The first number of splines extends in an axial direction of the first joint section and spans a circumferential surface of the first joint section. Each of the first number of splines has a base, a tip, and a pair of flanks that extends from the base to the tip and forms an acute angle. Each of the first number of splines are configured to be received between adjacent pairs of splines in the second number of splines as the first end of the first joint section and the second end of the second joint section are joined.

Tapered spline connection for drill pipe, casing, and tubing

An apparatus includes a first pin and a second pin. The first pin has a first joint section. The first joint section has first holes extending a length of the first joint section and terminating at a first preload face. The second pin has a second joint section. The second joint section has second holes extending a length of the first joint section and terminating at a second preload face. The second joint section is adapted to receive the first joint section and the first holes match the second holes when the first pin and the second pin are mated.

Electrical wiring for drill pipe, casing, and tubing

The invention is an improved rotary steerable tool. The improved rotary steerable tool comprises a control tube that slides vertical within a mandrel in response to changes in drilling fluid pressure, thereby opening and closing a channel between the mandrel and a piston chamber in a rotationally isolated sleeve. With the channel open, a piston in the piston chamber is exposed to the drilling fluid. When the drilling pressure is sufficient to cause the piston to move, the piston forces a deflection pad outward. After the deflection pad engages a borehole wall, any additional increases in pressure force the opposing side of sleeve toward the opposite wall, thereby tilting the direction of any attached drill bit. An optional guide lug and alignment sleeve orient the deflection pad with respect to other components.

Method and apparatus for drilling curved boreholes

A selectively adjustable double bend positive positioning directional drilling system for kickoff from a main well bore to change the directiion of drilling. The tool is selectively adjustable to facilitate running into the vertical well bore and subsequently to provide an aggressive build rate upon kickoff. The tool string incorporates a pair of kickoff pads--a lower fixed pad and an upper rotatively adjustable pad. As the tool is run into the well bore the adjustable pad is oriented away from the bend in the motor housing. Once in the hole, the string would be rotated relative to the adjustable pad by the reactive torque of the downhole motor and locked in the desired orientation. The adjustable pad incorporates an internal slot system to guide rotation and lock the pad in position. Alternatively, a single arm underreamer-type assembly could be used as the upper kickoff pad.
