Method and system for providing non-real-time content distribution services

A method includes communicating first data to users for real time consumption by the users using a first portion of a system capacity of a system during a first time using a broadcast mode. The system capacity comprises the first portion of a broadcast transmission used for communicating the first data for real time consumption by the users and remnant capacity separate from the first portion of the broadcast transmission for non-real time consumption. The consumption occurs at a same time as when a user requests to consume the first data. The method includes communicating the first data through the communication system to a first device comprising an intermediate data storage device using the remnant capacity of the broadcast transmission during the first time. A system and method for time-shifting a live broadcast, and facilitating the purchase of live or time-shifted broadcast content. The device records broadcast content being listened to by user, which gives the user the option to replay content. The device and method also provides a preview service that allows the user to experience fresh media content on a regular basis, even where a live signal is not available. The broadcast source broadcasts new content on a regular basis to avoid providing users with stale content. The user identifies content using the device and data is stored that corresponds to the identified content. The broadcast source or a third-party content provider uses the corresponding data to provide the identified content to the user. In addition to audio content, the device also provides and facilitates the acquisition of video, graphics, text or any other media content.

System and method for providing recording and playback of digital media content

A receiver adapted to receive a transmitted signal and provide a replay capability in response thereto. The inventive receiver includes the medium (electronic or physical) for storing at least a portion of the received signal. In accordance with present teachings, the inventive receiver selectively outputs either a stored selection or the receive signal in response to user input (i.e. a replay signal). In the illustrative embodiment, the receiver is a satellite digital audio radio service receiver having a radio frequency tuner and audio decoder. The system controller is a microprocessor that causes the system to store each selection as it is received. In the best mode, this is facilitated by the transmission and receipt of a start of selection signal and an end of selection signal. The replay signal is provided via a user interface. Software running on a microprocessor includes code for detecting the presence of the instant replay signal. On detection of the replay signal, the software causes the system to output the stored selection.
