A method of non-thermally ablating undesirable tissue in the body by application of pulsed, bipolar, instant charge reversal electrical fields of sufficient energy to cause complete and immediate cell membrane rupture and destruction. Energy is delivered through radio frequency pulses of particular frequencies, wave characteristics, pulse widths and pulse numbers, such that enhanced physical stresses are placed on the cell membrane to cause its immediate and complete destruction thereby spilling the entire cell content and membrane constituents into, the extracellular space without denaturing proteins so as to enable an immunological response to destroy and remove the target tissue and similarly marked tissue elsewhere in the subject.

Cancer immunotherapy by radiofrequency electrical membrane breakdown (RF-EMB)

Provided herein are new compositions, methods, and devices to treat cancer through a combination of immunologic chemotherapeutic agents and ablation techniques. These compositions can include immune checkpoint inhibitors, cytokines and nucleic acid drugs that aid in eliciting an immune response to treat the tumor. The administration of these compositions in addition to various ablating techniques provides a presentation of the cancer cell antigens to the immune system and the immunologic targeting of the cancer.

Immunologic treatment of cancer

An imaging, guidance, planning and treatment system integrated into a single unit or assembly of components, and a method for using same, that can be safely and effectively deployed to treat prostate cancer in all medical settings, including in a physician's office or in an outpatient setting. The system utilizes the novel process of Radio-Frequency Electrical Membrane Breakdown ('EMB' or 'RFEMB') to destroy the cellular membranes of unwanted or cancerous tissue without denaturing the intra-cellular contents of the cells comprising the tissue, thereby exposing tumor antigens and other intra-cellular components which can have an immunologic effect on local or distant cancerous tissue, with or without the addition of immunologic adjutant drugs. The system preferably comprises at least one EMB treatment probe, at least one trackable biopsy needle, at least one trackable anesthesia needle, and at least one controller unit for at least partially automating the treatment process.

System and method for creating radio-frequency energy electrical membrane breakdown for tissue ablation

A system is provided for reducing restenosis. A catheter apparatus is provided with at least first and second mono-polar electrodes positioned at an inflatable balloon. The balloon is sized to be positioned and expanded at a restenosis site. A voltage pulse generator is coupled to the first and second mono-polar electrodes. The voltage pulse generator is configured to apply an electric field, in a controlled manner, to the restenosis site in an amount sufficient to produce electroporation of the restenosis site, and below an amount that causes thermal damage to the restenosis site.

Methods and systems for treating restenosis using electroporation

A system for treating benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) of a prostate. At least first and second mono-polar electrodes are configured to be introduced at or near a BPH tissue site of the prostate gland of the patient. A voltage pulse generator is coupled to the first and second mono-polar electrodes. The voltage pulse generator is configured to apply sufficient electrical pulses between the first and second mono-polar electrodes to induce electroporation of cells in the BPH tissue site, to create necrosis of cells of the BPH tissue site, but insufficient to create a thermal damaging effect to a majority of the BPH tissue site.

Methods and systems for treating BPH using electroporation

A system is provided for supporting a patient during computed axial tomography imaging. The system includes a movable platform formed of a radiolucent material, a discrete attachment region in the platform, and a curvilinear articulating arm coupled to the platform at the discrete attachment region. A method for supporting a patient during a plurality of procedures also is provided. The method includes: disposing the patient on a movable platform formed of a radiolucent material; positioning a device with respect to the patient, the device being disposed on a curvilinear articulating arm coupled to the platform; placing the platform, positioned device, and patient in a computed axial tomography imaging system and performing an imaging procedure.

Support system for use when performing medical imaging of a patient

The present invention is directed towards a combined electrosurgical-cryosurgical instrument for tissue ablation. The instrument comprises a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end being electrically and thermally conductive; a radiofrequency insulation sheath surrounding the outer surface of the shaft; a cryo-insulation sheath surrounding a surface of the shaft; a radiofrequency power supply source; a cryogen supply tube within the shaft; and a cryogen supply source connected to the cryogen supply tube. The power source provides electrical energy to the distal end of the shaft, and the cryogen supply tube provides a cryogen to the distal end of the shaft.

An improved cryosurgical system includes means for cooling the cryoprobe instrument to temperatures below the normal boiling point of liquid nitrogen as well as means for recovering the sub-cooled liquid coolant. A unique cryoprobe instrument of simplified construction uses an active vacuum for thermal insulation. Means are provided for controllably adjusting the length of the freezing zone of the cryoprobe to allow the freezing zone to be adjusted for different sizes and shapes of tumors which may be 'observed' before surgery by ultrasound imaging. Multiple, disposable cryoprobe instruments can be individually controlled for both operating temperature and freeze zone length. A preferred refrigeration system for sub-cooling liquid nitrogen refrigerant or other cryogenic liquid refrigerant is based on the principles of evaporative cooling.

Cryosurgical instrument and system and method of cryosurgery

A grasping forceps in the form of a rongeur having the teeth of its jaws displaced inwardly to create a rim between the outer edge of each jaw and its teeth which acts as a barrier for pushing the dura or tissue away from the teeth during the closing of the jaws. In other embodiments the barrier may take the form of guide members such as springs mounted to each jaw. In one such embodiment the guide members may comprise a guide member interconnecting the jaws at their distal end with guide members also interconnecting the jaws on each side of the jaws inwardly of the distal end. In a further variation each guide member may be mounted to a respective jaw peripherally around and outwardly of the jaw.

Safety surgical grasping forceps

A biopsy needle insertion guide and method of use with an ultrasound probe in medical procedures to accurately position biopsy needles in internal tissues. The insertion guide comprises a body which is removably mountable on an ultrasound probe and which comprises a clamp affixable about the probe and an elongated adjustment guide extending from the clamp in a direction perpendicular to the probe. A slide block engages the adjustment guide and is slidably adjustable therealong and a biopsy needle holder and guide assembly is carried by the slide block and is adjustably extendable from the slide block in a direction parallel to the probe. A method of use is described wherein the insertion guide is used to accurately place biopsy needles in a human prostate, the needles being then used to accurately place cryoprobes in the prostate for cryogenic surgery of the gland.
