A method of determining the heading of an excavator at a worksite uses a magnetic field sensor, mounted on the excavator, inclinometers that provide an indication of the pitch and roll of the excavator, a gyroscopic sensor that senses the rotational rate of the excavator about the Z axis of the magnetic field sensor, and a processor circuit, having an associated memory. A calibration table of data is created and stored using the gyroscopic sensor as the excavator is rotated at a uniform velocity. The sensed indications of the magnetic field from the coordinate reference frame of the sensor are transformed to the local level plane coordinate reference frame using the outputs from the inclinometers.

A method of augmenting a mobile radio positioning system (Mobile_RADPS) by using a stationary fan laser transmitter. A rover comprises the mobile radio positioning system (Mobile_RADPS) integrated with a mobile laser detector. The stationary fan laser transmitter is integrated with a stationary radio positioning system (Stationary_RADPS). The method comprises the following steps: (A)generating a single sloping fan beam by the stationary fan laser transmitter; (B) detecting the single sloping fan beam generated by the stationary fan laser transmitter by using the mobile laser detector; and (C) timing the fan laser beam strike at the rover's location and using the timing of the fan laser beam strike at the rover's location to improve an accuracy in determination of position coordinates of the rover.

Method for augmenting radio positioning system using single fan laser

An arrangement is provided for determining the relative angular orientation between an excavator bucket and the dipper stick of an excavator. The excavator bucket is mounted on a bucket linkage that is pivotally secured to the end of the dipper stick. An hydraulic actuator has an hydraulic cylinder pivotally connected to the dipper stick, and a piston rod pivotally connected to the bucket linkage. Extension or contraction of the hydraulic actuator causes the excavator bucket to be pivoted by the bucket linkage with respect to the dipper stick. A cable extension linear position transducer having a transducer casing, a sheath extending from the casing to a pulley system, and an extensible belt cable extending from the sheath through the pulley system to an end of the piston rod, provides an electrical output related to the extension of the belt cable from the sheath. A transducer mounting secures the casing of the cable extension linear position transducer in fixed relationship to the hydraulic cylinder. A clip or a release mechanism secures the extensible belt cable to the piston rod. By this arrangement, extension or contraction of the hydraulic actuator causes the output of the transducer to vary, thus providing an electrical output related to the relative angular orientation of the excavator bucket with respect to the dipper stick.

An arrangement is provided for determining the relative angular orientation between an excavator bucket and the dipper stick of an excavator. The excavator bucket is mounted on a bucket linkage that is pivotally secured to the end of the dipper stick. A hydraulic actuator has a hydraulic cylinder pivotally connected to the dipper stick, and a piston rod pivotally connected to the bucket linkage. A transducer mounting secures the casing of the cable extension linear position transducer in fixed relationship to the hydraulic cylinder. A clip secures the extensible belt cable to the piston rod. By this arrangement, extension or contraction of the hydraulic actuator causes the output of the transducer to vary, thus providing an electrical output related to the relative angular orientation of the excavator bucket with respect to the dipper stick.

A laser transmitter includes an optical system arranged to generate laser beam and configured to project the laser beam radially so as to define a plane through which the laser beam is projected. A positioning device is coupled to the laser transmitter for adjusting an angular orientation of the optical system with respect to a first axis and with respect to a second axis. The angular orientation of the laser transmitter is adjusted so that the plane through which the laser beam is projected has a first slope with respect to the first axis and a second slope with respect to the second axis. A rotary encoder is arranged to determine a rotary position of the laser beam as it rotates to define the plane. A target is positioned in an alignment direction corresponding to the direction to which the laser transmitter is to be aligned. The laser transmitter may be aligned with respect to the first axis, the second axis or some other reference. A processor, in conjunction with a detector, determines the alignment direction. Once the alignment direction is determined, the processor calculates a first calculated slope and a second calculated slope and causes the positioning device to adjust the angular orientation of the optical system accordingly so that the plane through which the laser beam is projected corresponds to the first slope and the second slope in the alignment direction.

The used filter and the used fluid are to be obtained and to be disposed in a container after the new fluid has been removed from the container. The apparatus comprises a container having a hollow body for containing said fluids, and a pair of apertures for pouring fluids into and from the container. The container containing a new or unspent fluid is transported from an origin or source to a destination. The new fluid is poured from the container and into an engine. The used fluid from the engine is disposed into the container, along with any associated filters from the engine, and the container containing the used filter totally immersed in the used fluid is transported to the origin or source.

A laser light detector is provided which can be used to detect pulsed laser light that is produced by a rotating laser light source on a construction job site. The laser light detector provides an easily-read display which is indicative of the present level or elevation of the laser light detector with respect to the plane of rotating laser light. The laser light detector has a very large dynamic range, while maintaining a very good signal-to-noise ratio, and can, therefore, be used at both short and long distances from the rotating laser light source. Apparatus operable in accordance with the method of the present invention for measuring the angle of incidence of a light beam or plane relative to level comprises a photodetector array for sensing the light and a level mirror preferably comprising a pool of mercury. Optics are provided for transmitting the light to the photodetector array in alignment with the angle of incidence of the light (aligned light) and also after the light has been reflected from the mercury pool (reflected light). A shutter is provided for separating aligned light from reflected light such that distinct signals representative of the two are generated by the photodetector array. The distinct signals are processed by up-counting and down-counting a counter circuit to determine the average centers of light spots representative of the aligned light and the reflected light and the distance between those average centers which is representative of the deviation of the light beam or plane from level.

Method and apparatus for measuring incident light angle relative to level

A laser beam three dimensional position measurement system includes a laser transmitter mounted at a stationary reference position at a work site and a receiver mounted on a mobile machine at the site. The transmitter produces a laser reference plane by sweeping a laser beam about the transmitter. The receiver includes a retroreflector which intercepts and reflects laser energy back to the transmitter when the laser beam sweeps past the retroreflector. The system also includes at the transmitter a circuit composed of a photodetector, timer, clock and counter. The photodetector senses laser energy reflected back to the transmitter from the retroreflector. The timer modulates the laser beam produced by the transmitter in response to detection of the beam. The counter is connected to the clock and timer, and is enabled by the timer to start counting electrical pulses received from the clock when the beam is modulated. The counter is disabled to stop counting electrical pulses when the modulation is detected. The number of pulses counted by the counter is indicative of the range of the receiver from the transmitter. The orientation of the beam relative to a fixed reference axis at the time reflected laser energy is detected defines the direction of the receiver relative to the transmitter.

Laser-based measurement system

A laser beam alignment system includes a transmitter which establishes a laser reference plane by continuously rotating a horizontal laser beam about the transmitter. A remotely located receiver senses the elevation of the laser reference plane and reflects a portion of the laser energy back to the transmitter where the reflected energy is employed to produce a signal indicative of the range of the receiver and its location with respect to a reference axis. The position of the receiver is thus established in three dimensions.
