An improved stereolithography apparatus for forming three-dimensional objects using multiple chambered resin vats and a quick disconnect mounting system to permit concurrent use of multiple photopolymer build materials and easy change over of resin vats is disclosed. The apparatus permits easy change over from multiple chambered vat use to single chamber vat use and vice versa or change over between multiple chambered vats.

Stereolithographic apparatus

A stereolithography apparatus having a resin vat with resupply containers in one-way flow communication and a leveling container in two-way flow communication, an automatic offload cart to remove and replace build support platforms, an elevator assembly for supporting and releasably retaining a build platform removably attached to the stereolithography apparatus frame such that elevator forks supporting the build platform can be released into the vat and removed from the stereolithography apparatus with the vat, and a recoater assembly and recoater blade for mapping the resin surface in the vat and applying a fresh coating of resin to a cross-section being built in the vat.

A ventilation and cooling system for a selective deposition modeling apparatus dispensing a curable material. The ventilation and cooling system captures airborne contaminants in the apparatus making the apparatus suitable for use in an office environment. A pressure drop is established within the apparatus to assure that all air that enters the apparatus passes through a filter which captures the airborne contaminants before the air is expelled from the apparatus. Sensors are provided to assure that the ventilation and cooling system is function properly, and if not, the apparatus is either shut down or a signal is provided to the operator indicating that the system is not functioning properly.

Solid state lasers that use non-linear optical crystals to generate frequency tripled or quadrupled output in the ultraviolet have low lifetimes due to damage to the face of the non-linear crystal through which the ultraviolet signal exits. To prevent this damage, the tripling or quadrupling crystal is provided within a controlled environment that is maintained substantially free from contaminants such as silicon-bearing and organic compounds. The tripling or quadrupling crystal is enclosed within a tubular chamber with windows on the ends of the tube that provide optical access to the entrance and exit faces of the tripling or quadrupling crystal. All heating elements and alignment elements for the crystal are outside of the chamber. Because the crystal is stored within the hermetically sealed chamber, contaminants are not available within the environment of the crystal that could interact with the energetic photons of the ultraviolet output of the frequency multiplied solid state laser. The windows and walls of the chamber are preferably made of materials that can be cleaned effectively, such as sapphire or quartz for the windows and stainless steel for the walls and flanges of the chamber.
