A method for priority buffering of trace data in a computing system includes receiving instances of trace data by a priority assignment module, the trace data being generated by events that occur during execution of computer software in the computing system; assigning a priority to each instance of trace data, wherein the priority is assigned based on the event that generated the instance of trace data; and inserting the instances of trace data into a plurality of priority buffers based on their respective assigned priorities.

A system and method are provided for determining whether to provide a software program update to one of a plurality of client processors. Each client processor has a copy of at least one of a plurality of client software programs. A respective set of system configuration attributes are sent from each client processor and stored in an administration server processor. Each set of system configuration attributes is transmitted to a selection server processor. A respective update recognizer program and software program update corresponding to each respective one of the plurality of client software programs are next sent to the administration server processor. Each client processor executes at least one of the update recognizer programs to issue a notification indicating whether the corresponding software program update is applicable. The administration server processor receives the respective notification from each client processor and transmits the software program update.

System and method for managing system configuration across a network

Objects of one object model (e.g., a Common Object Model (COM)) are called by programs of another object model (e.g., Java). To facilitate the call, a set of interfaces is generated that corresponds to the interfaces of a COM typelib. The interfaces include enough information to enable type-checking of the generated code to be performed during compilation, but do not include implementations of the interfaces. The implementations are included in a proxy object, which is employed in making the call to the COM object.

Reducing the size of generated code used to call common object model objects, while preserving type-checking

A host computer provides an object stored in the host computer to a target computer. In response to a need for an object at the target computer, the host computer generates and transfers to the target computer a proxy program instead of the object. The proxy program, when executed at the target computer, provides the object. Usually, the proxy program is much shorter than the object itself, and this reduces message traffic. The proxy program has various forms such as a call to another program resident in the target computer to recreate the object or a request to a function within the target computer to provide the object. The host computer can also be programmed into an object oriented environment, the object referencing other objects, and the proxy program forming an agent in the target computer which requests these other objects from the host computer only as needed by the target computer.

Technique to minimize data transfer between two computers

A server computer selects code updates to download to a client computer as follows. The server computer identifies code updates which are consistent with basic system characteristics of the client computer. Then, the server computer sends to the client computer one or more 'recognizer' programs which execute in the client computer to determine whether the client computer has a version other than a current version of the consistent code updates. The client sends the results to the server computer which generates a list of those code updates which are consistent with the basic system characteristics, and represent programs that exist on the client computer for which an update would be appropriate. The server computer also identifies new data which is consistent with attributes of a user of the client computer. Then, the server computer sends to the client computer one or more recognizer programs which execute in the client computer to determine whether the client computer already has the consistent new data. The client sends the results to the server computer which generates a list of that new data which is consistent with the user attributes and not currently resident in the client computer.

Selection of code updates, data updates or new data for client

A computer system identifies web pages of interest to a client. The system comprises a cataloging function which defines a hierarchy of subject categories, logically arranges a multitude of web pages in the categories and periodically adds web pages to the categories. The system also comprises a profile building function which receives selections of categories from a user, records the selections and responds with an identification of subcategories of each selected category. The user can make further selections from the subcategories. Alternately, the user makes a key word search and then selects data web pages from the results of the search. The profile building function records the categories of the data web pages selected by the user. Next, the user requests a list of recently added web pages of interest to the user. In response, the system identifies recently added web pages from the categories previously selected by the user and from the categories of the data web pages previously selected by the user.

System for identifying new web pages of interest to a user

A server computer selects code updates to download to a client computer. The server computer identifies code updates which are consistent with basic system characteristics of the client computer. Then, the server computer sends to the client computer one or more 'recognizer' programs or one or more addresses outside of the client computer of the one or more recognizer programs which execute in the client computer to determine whether the client computer has a version other than a current version of the identified code updates. The client sends the results to the server computer which generates a list of code updates which are consistent with the basic system characteristics, representing programs that exist on the client computer for which an update would be appropriate. Next, the server computer sends the list or information about the list to the client computer. A user at the client computer selects from the list and sends the selections to the server computer. In response, the server computer sends addresses of the selected code updates to the client computer and the client computer downloads the selected code updates from a content server. At some later time, the recognizer programs corresponding to the selected code updates are executed again before the selected code updates are installed in the client computer.
