A technique facilitates automatic shut-in of a well and disconnect of a corresponding landing string. The landing string is employed in a well application and comprises a landing string module which measures a parameter or a variety of parameters. Those parameters may be used to determine the occurrence of an event which initiates shut-in of the well and disconnect of the landing string. The subsea landing string system is constructed to enable autonomous shut-in and disconnect.

An apparatus includes a string that extends into a well and a tool that is disposed in the string. The tool is adapted to form a seat to catch an object communicated to the tool via a passageway of the string in response to the tool being perforated.

Method and apparatus for completing a multi-stage well

A technique facilitates mechanical operation of components, e.g. valves, without utilizing electronics at the components or control lines routed to the components. An actuation control system is fully mechanical in the sense that it is constructed to mechanically shift to different control positions via pressure input, such as pressure input supplied along a wellbore annulus. The actuation control system utilizes a spool valve coupled with a pilot control circuit which establishes a reference pressure that can be used in shifting the spool valve to different operational positions.

A technique facilitates valve operations in many applications including well related applications. A valve utilizes a piston which moves along an arc. The valve has an outer housing and an inner housing spaced to create an arcuate pressure chamber which extends along the arc. A piston is mounted in the arcuate pressure chamber for movement along the arc. A hydraulic force or other force may be selectively applied directly against an end of the arcuate piston to shift the arcuate piston along the arc. In some applications, the piston comprises a cutting edge oriented to enable performance of a cutting operation.

A technique facilitates failsafe closure of a valve used in, for example, a subsea test tree. The technique utilizes a valve combined with a cutter oriented to sever well equipment passing through an interior passage of the valve. The valve is operatively coupled with an actuation system having an actuator piston which controls cutting and valve closure. The failsafe valve and the cutter are shifted to an open position by applying pressure in a control fluid chamber to shift the actuator piston. However, the actuator piston, and thus the valve and cutter, are biased toward a closed position via pressure applied in a pressure chamber and a gas precharge chamber. The combined pressure ensures adequate force for shearing of the well equipment and closure of the valve when hydraulic control pressure is lost. In some applications, additional closing force may be selectively provided to the actuator piston.

Failsafe valve system

An apparatus that is usable with a well includes a body, a blocking member, a sensor, a radially expandable element and a controller. The body includes a longitudinal passageway that extends through the body, and the blocking member is disposed in the passageway to check fluid from flowing in a predefined direction through the passageway. The sensor is disposed on the body to sense a property of an environment of the string as the object is being communicated through the passageway; the radially expandable element is disposed on the body; and the controller is disposed on the body to selectively autonomously control the expandable element to land the body in a downhole restriction in response to the sensing.

In-riser power generation devices and methods are utilized to generate power subsea to operate subsea devices of a subsea well system. A turbine power generator is located in fluid communication with a subsea fluid flow path of a subsea well system and the turbine power generator is operationally connected to a subsea power device.

A system for use in a well includes a completion system having a shoulder contact region, an electric submersible pumping system deployed downhole via a cable for landing on the completion system, a tubular member coupled to the electric submersible pumping system and extending downhole from the electric submersible pumping system, and a shoulder mechanism slidably mounted on the tubular member for engagement with the shoulder contact region during landing, the shoulder mechanism being selectively settable along the tubular member to counter tensile loading in the cable. The shoulder mechanism is set against the tubular member via anchors actuated against the tubular member, and the anchors are actuated by a piston movably mounted within a housing of the shoulder mechanism.

Well operating elements and related methods are described. One embodiment may take the form of a method that includes deploying a well operating element having first and second components into a well bore, wherein the second component is soluble in the selected wellbore environment and whose rate and/or location of dissolution is at least partially controlled by structure of the first component. This abstract allows a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the disclosure. It will not be used to interpret or limit the scope or meaning of the claims. 37 CFR 1.72(b).

Well operating elements comprising a soluble component and methods of use

Systems and methods for using propellant as a force generator in component actuation are disclosed. One embodiment may take the form of a method including deploying at least one component to a subsea location, controlling operation of the at least one component using a control system, and igniting a propellant. The ignition of the propellant actuates the at least one component. Another embodiment may take the form of a subsea system including a control system, a propellant system in communication with the control system, and a component in communication with the propellant system. The propellant system is ignitable by the control system upon receipt of a ignite signal and upon losing communication with the control system after being placed in an armed state by the control system. The component is actuatable by the propellant system after ignition of the propellant system.

Propellant energy to operate subsea equipment

A technique includes deploying an untethered object though a passageway of a string in a well; and sensing a property of an environment of the string, an electromagnetic coupling or a pressure as the object is being communicated through the passageway. The technique includes selectively autonomously operating the untethered object in response to the sensing.

A technique facilitates control over flow of hydraulic actuating fluid used to perform a plurality of actuating functions in a subsea well application. A control module is employed for controlling a plurality of hydraulically controlled components and is located along a subsea test tree at a position relatively close to the hydraulically controlled components. The control module, in turn, is controlled electronically via an electric line which provides electric control signals corresponding to desired control instructions regarding the hydraulically controlled components. By moving the control module closer to the hydraulically controlled components response time is greatly reduced.

Distibuted control system for well application

A tensions compensator assembly for a slip type joint in an offshore work string. The assembly includes a chamber at the joint which is constructed in a manner to offset or minimize a pressure differential in a production channel that runs through the work string. Thus, potentially very high pressures running through the string are less apt to prematurely force actuation and expansiveness of the slip joint. Rather, the expansive movement of the joint is more properly responsive to heave, changes in offshore platform elevation and other outside forces of structural concern.

A method for pressurizing a hydraulic accumulator includes creating an annulus pressure zone in hydraulic communication with the hydraulic accumulator through a hydraulic recharging circuit and applying a hydraulic pressure to the annulus pressure zone. Operating the hydraulic recharging circuit in response to applying the hydraulic pressure and pressurizing the hydraulic accumulator in response to operating the hydraulic recharging circuit.

A technique that is usable with a well includes deploying a plurality of location markers in a passageway of the well and deploying an untethered object in the passageway such that the object travels downhole via the passageway. The technique includes using the untethered object to sense proximity of at least some of the location markers as the object travels downhole, and based on the sensing, selectively expand its size to cause the object to become lodged in the passageway near a predetermined location.
