A process for producing a high VI/low volatility lubricating oil basestock and a lubricating oil basestock prepared by said process. The process comprises subjecting the raffinate from a solvent extraction step to a two step, single stage hydroconversion process wherein the first step involves severe hydroconversion of the raffinate followed by a cold hydrofinishing step.

Polyolefin lubricant base oils can be surprisingly gelled by layer and chain type overtreated higher dialkyl dimethyl ammonium clays preferably containing a minimum of 12% excess of the quaternary ion moiety over their ion exchange capacity. For example, an overtreated dihydrogenated ditallow ammonium montmorillonite containing a 22% excess of the quaternary ion can be used to prepare a polydecene based grease although it does not gel mineral oil lubricants. In contrast, the known clay analog of equivalent treatment gels the mineral oil but not the synthetic polyolefin lubricant under comparable conditions.

A lubricating grease composition is provided having improved salt water corrosion resistance and comprising a lithium complex grease thickener, a metal naphthenate and a quaternary ammonium salt.

Grease composition resistant to salt water corrosion

A grease composition is provided having improved extreme pressure properties and comprising an additive package of an insoluble phosphorus compound and an oil soluble sulfur compound. The particularly useful insoluble phosphorus compounds include the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts of a phosphorus acid while the useful soluble sulfur compounds include sulfurized hydrocarbons and organometallic sulfur salts.

Pressure grease composition

A lubricating grease having an exceptional ability to protect metal bearing surfaces against rusting or corrosion in the presence of salt water contains a synergistic combination of a lithium complex grease thickener, a quaternary ammonium nitrate and an amino imidazoline. The grease thickener is a complex of a lithium soap of a C.sub.12 to C.sub.24 hydroxy fatty acid and a monolithium salt of boric acid, and can include as a third component a lithium salt of a second hydroxycarboxylic acid such as salicyclic acid
