Systems and methods for associating a wireless device to a host. The wireless device is associated to the host via a binding and discovery process. The binding process establishes the association. A unique identifier and other binding information is provided to the wireless device, which is stored in the wireless device to establish the link to the console. The binding information is retained in the wireless device. The discovery process enables the wireless device to join a session at hosted by the host. The host sends broadcast packets that are compared to the stored information in the wireless device. The broadcast packets are validated and authenticated to complete the discovery process. A visual indicator on the host and/or controller may indicate the success or failure of either the binding or discovery process.

System for associating a wireless device to a console device

Methods of wireless communication between a gaming console and a wireless accessory using a protocol. The protocol is used in a TDMA frequency hopping spread spectrum system to enable simultaneous communication of voice and data between a plurality of wireless accessories and the gaming console. The protocol provides specific time slots for upstream and downstream transmissions, as well as a retransmission time slots to enable a robust environment with minimal latency.

Gaming console wireless protocol for peripheral devices

A hand-held input device provides a directional force feedback that acts on a housing of the device. The input device includes a threaded shaft that is rotatably driven by an electric motor. The motor causes a mass to move in response to a control signal received from a host computing device, such as personal computer that is executing a game or simulation. When the mass is rapidly accelerated or abruptly stopped in response to the control signal, the change in momentum of the mass imparts a directional reactive force to the housing, and an operator holding the housing feels the haptic force.

Force feedback mechanism for gamepad device

A haptic gaming device includes an integral internal power supply adapted to be connected directly to alternating current (AC) line power. The haptic gaming device, a disclosed example of which is a force feedback joystick, provides a feedback force to a user gripping a control handle of the device. The force on the control handle is produced by one or more electrical motors within the base of the device. Electrical power for the motors is provided by the integral internal power supply and is regulated to accommodate a relatively wide range of input AC line voltage. The power supply includes a pulse width modulated switching control that produces pulses of direct current (DC), which are applied to a first primary winding of a transformer in the power supply. A second primary winding in the transformer produces a feedback signal employed to control a pulse width modulated switching (PWM) control, which varies a width of the DC pulses applied to the first primary winding so that the voltage output from a secondary winding of the transformer remains within a desired range. Because the integral internal power supply is relatively compact and includes only a few components, it has a low cost and readily fits within the base of the joystick.

Haptic feedback gaming device with integral power supply

A computer input device includes a user manipulable portion having a first primary axis of motion. An inclination sensor has a first sensing axis. The inclination sensor is coupled to the user manipulable portion such that the first sensing axis is disposed at a first offset angle relative to the first primary access of motion. An output component is coupled to the inclination sensor and provides output information indicative of sensed inclination.
