Systems and methods for a protective casing are provided. In at least one embodiment, a protective casing includes a flexible insulation layer configured to inhibit thermal energy from conducting from an external side of the flexible insulation layer to an internal side of the flexible insulation layer. The protective casing also includes a microlattice layer abutting the internal side of the flexible insulation layer, the microlattice layer configured to distribute thermal energy that passes through the flexible insulation layer substantially throughout the microlattice layer. Further, the protective casing includes a heat absorbing material that impregnates the microlattice layer, the heat absorbing material configured to absorb the thermal energy in the microlattice layer.

A recorder for a vehicle comprises a crash survivable memory unit, which includes a first antenna assembly including a first resonant element configured for near field data communications and to receive near field power transmissions, and a crash protected memory assembly that operatively communicates with the first antenna assembly. In certain embodiments, a crash survivable memory unit, comprises a memory device that records flight data; a flexible insulation layer that inhibits thermal energy from conducting from an external side of the flexible insulation layer to an internal side of the flexible insulation layer, wherein the internal side faces the memory device; a microlattice layer abutting the internal side and enclosing the memory device, the microlattice layer configured to distribute thermal energy that passes through the flexible insulation layer substantially throughout the microlattice layer; and a heat absorbing material that impregnates the microlattice layer, the heat absorbing material configured to absorb the thermal energy in the microlattice layer; and an impact resistant layer encircling the flexible insulation layer, wherein the impact resistant layer absorbs shocks that result from other objects contacting the impact resistant layer.

A crash-survivable enclosure (10) for protecting a data memory unit (45) used in vehicles has a shell (15) with an inner surface (22). The shell (15) defines an interior cavity (26) which contains the data memory unit (45). The enclosure (10) has a heat absorption composition (20) which lines a portion of the inner surface (22) and substantially surrounds the data memory unit (45). The composition is capable of exhibiting an endothermic phase transition when subjected to a high temperature environment. The phase transition is typically from a solid phase to a non-solid, flowable phase. The shell can also have a plurality of vents (42). The vents (42) are sized and positioned to permit the heat absorption material (20) to drain from the shell when in the non-solid, flowable phase. The vents (42) can be positioned such that the flowable heat absorption material will drain regardless of the orientation of the shell (15).
