Multi-component compositions comprising as a first component a fluorinated compound, as a second component a fluorinated aromatic compound and a third component comprising an alkane are disclosed. These compositions can be formulated to provide single phase systems which serve as effective solvents for fluorinated oils as well as petroleum oils. The compositions can serve as solvent cleaners or can be combined directly with oils to provide a delivery system for the oil.

This invention provides a low-cost method of producing .alpha.,.omega.-alkanedicarboxylic acids. Particular bioconversion conditions result in highly efficient conversion of fatty acid, fatty acid ester, or alkane substrates to diacids. Candida tropicalis AR40 or similar yeast strains are grown in a medium containing a carbon source and a nitrogen source at a temperature of 31.degree. C. to 38.degree. C., while additional carbon source is continuously added, until maximum cell growth is attained. Within 0-3 hours of this point, substrate is added to the culture to initiate conversion. An .alpha.,.omega.-alkanedicarboxylic acid made according to this method is also provided.

This invention describes a low cost biofermentation medium, and an economical method using the medium, for the manufacture of .alpha., .omega.-alkanedicarboxylic acids. The invention provides a biofermentation medium and a method of bioproduction for these important diacids which makes their large scale commercial production economically feasible using a biocatalyst. This method of production obviates the need for chemical synthesis using expensive starting materials from fossil fuels, and does not generate a costly hazardous waste stream.

A polyimide composition and polyimide composite are provided. The composition has a polyimide resin, a reactive plasticizer and a phosphate. The composition is crosslinked and exhibits desired levels of processability and improved thermooxidative stability. The composites have a polyimide resin, a phosphate and reinforcing fibers, and exhibit reduced wear and friction. The compositions and composites are useful for making aircraft engine hardware such as bushings.

Polyetherimides are prepared from at least two diamines selected from the group consisting of o-phenylenediamine, m-phenylenediamine and 4-aminophenyl ether and a dicarboxyphenyl ether anhydride, or the esterification product thereof with a low molecular weight alkanol such as methanol. 3,4-Dicarboxyphenyl ether dianhydride is preferred. Said polyimides are tough, flexible and stable at high temperatures.

Silicone-polyimides having improved flexibility can be obtained, by sequentially intercondensing organic diamine, aminoorgano terminated polydiorganosiloxane and aromatic bisanhydride. A decrease in flexural modulus and an increase in elongation percent is effected while flame retardance remains substantially unchanged.
