A computer-implemented method and information handling system manage a rate of decreasing full capacity of a rechargeable battery by using a projected/target rate of decreasing charge capacity for the battery. The method includes determining an actual rate of decreasing charge capacity of the battery, comparing the actual rate of decreasing charge capacity to the projected/target rate of decreasing charge capacity to determine whether the actual rate of decreasing charge capacity is greater than the projected rate of decreasing charge capacity, and if the actual rate of decreasing charge capacity is greater than the projected/target rate of decreasing charge capacity, modifying one or more variable parameters to slow down the actual rate of decreasing charge capacity of the battery such that the actual rate of decreasing charge capacity remains within a range of the projected/target rate of decreasing charge capacity, and charging and discharging the battery using the modified parameters.

A processor performance state optimization includes a system to change a performance state of a processor. In an embodiment, the system to change a performance state of the processor includes a processor and a step logic sub-system operatively coupled with the processor and is operable to communicate a performance state change request to the processor. A core voltage regulator is operatively coupled with the step logic sub-system. An end performance state sub-system to determine a desired end performance state is coupled with the step logic sub-system. And, an enable sub-state transition sub-system to enable sub-state transitions is coupled with the step logic sub-system.

Processor performance state optimization

A battery management system calculates expected run time for the information handling system from either an average or instantaneous power consumption and the remaining battery capacity. When power is attached to the battery, the battery management system compares an expected run time with a current usage day profile. If the information handling system is operating in a non-active use period or if system run time can extend sufficiently into the non-use period then a slow charge rate is applied which will charge the batteries up to a substantially charged state (e.g., 80-95% of full capacity) and top off of the battery is deferred such that battery is fully charged somewhat before the average beginning of the next day (e.g., approximately one to two hours before the average beginning of the next day).

Battery charge management using usage profiling

Systems and methods are provided for implementing a persistent battery system shutdown condition when a battery pack voltage level drops below a predetermined minimum acceptable operating voltage threshold that is above a pre-determined permanent failure operating voltage threshold at which the battery pack is permanently disabled. The disclosed systems and methods may be implemented such that shutdown portion of the power-consuming components of the information handling system are not allowed to be restarted until external power has been first provided and applied to at least partially recharge the battery cells of the battery pack to a battery voltage level that is above the minimum acceptable operating voltage threshold and/or when sufficient external power is applied to power the information handling system and at the same time charge the battery cells of the battery pack.

Systems and methods for implementing persistent battery shutdown for information handling systems

A method for managing power to an information handling system (IHS) is disclosed wherein the method includes providing a battery and an external power supply operable to supply power to the IHS. The method also includes providing an application programming interface (API) to the IHS, wherein the API is configured to monitor a first parameter and a second parameter. The method further includes supplying power to the IHS via the external power supply if the first parameter reaches a first threshold level and supplying power to the IHS via the battery if the second parameter reaches a second threshold level. An information handling system (IHS) is further disclosed including an external power supply, a battery, and a controller operable to select between the external power supply and the battery to supply power to the IHS. The IHS further includes an application programmable interface (API) operable to monitor a first parameter and direct the controller to select the external power supply to supply power to the IHS if the first parameter reaches a first threshold level, and wherein the API is further operable to monitor a second parameter and direct the controller to select the battery to supply power to the IHS if the second parameter reaches a second threshold level.

Power management methods and systems using an external power supply

A forced power down signal issues from an I/O device to an information handling system through an optical interconnect if the information handling system fails to power down in response to a normal power down message. A 100% duty cycle signal issues from an optical interface at the I/O device and is detected by an optical interface of the information handling system, which issues a command to force a power down of the information handling system in response to the forced power down signal.

A smart cart for automatically managing a plurality of information handling systems. The system provides a plurality of functions. For example, in certain embodiments, the system provides one or more of security authentication for distributing the notebooks, automatic asset tracking functionality; identification of notebook charge status; provides identification of asset information (e.g., an asset tag number, a serial number or a computer name); network access to push patch updates at night when units are not in use; and charging control to optimize system availability and prevent AC input circuit overload.

A performance state control system includes a processor and a voltage regulator coupled to the processor. The voltage regulator provides a regulated voltage to the processor, as instructed by the processor. A logic circuit coupled to the processor and the voltage regulator detects that the processor is in an operating power state, determines a time that the processor is in the operating state and instructs the processor to execute a performance state determination algorithm when the time that the processor is in the operating state exceeds a pre-determined threshold value.

Accurate power usage for a portable information handling system is provided using input power measurement circuitry. A calibration step is performed when the portable information handling system is powered down and charging. The calibration step includes obtaining a battery charge measurement from a battery, and then using this measurement to calibrate an input power measurement made with respect to power being provided by the AC/DC adapter. Known losses from other sources within the system can also be considered in the auto-calibration of the input power measurement. Subsequently, when the portable information handling system is powered on and operating on power provided by the AC/DC adapter, power usage can be determined and reported using the auto-calibrated input power measurement as an indication of the power usage of the portable information handling system.
