A transmission is for a marine drive. The transmission comprises an input shaft that is caused to rotate by the marine drive and an output shaft that is caused to rotate by the input shaft. The input shaft and output shaft are operatively connected to each other such that forward rotation of the input shaft causes forward rotation of the output shaft when the transmission is shifted into a forward gear, and such that forward rotation of the input shaft causes reverse rotation of the output shaft when the transmission is shifted into a reverse gear. A planetary gearset operatively couples the input shaft to the output shaft only when the transmission is shifted into the reverse gear.

Planetary transmission arrangements for marine propulsion devices

A cooling system for a marine propulsion device provides a water flow directing device, which is generally annular in shape, which has a water inlet extending from it. The water flow directing device is attachable to a gear case of a marine propulsion device and is configured to conduct a flow of water from a water inlet to a passage formed within the marine propulsion device and connected in fluid communication with a water pump that causes the water to flow to a cooling system of an internal combustion engine. The water flow directing device is removably attachable to a seal carrier which, in turn, is attachable to a bearing carrier disposed within an internal cavity of the gear case. A secondary inlet is provided through a surface of the gear case and in fluid communication with an internal annular passage of the water flow directing device to encourage a flow of water into the cooling system when the marine propulsion device is operating at slow speeds or is stationary in a body of water.

Water pickup configuration for a marine propulsion system

A transmission for a marine propulsion system uses a cone clutch in such a way that, when in a forward gear position, torque is transmitted from an input shaft, or driving shaft, to an output shaft, or driven shaft, solely through the cone clutch. When in forward gear position, driving torque between the driving and driven shafts is not transmitted through any gear teeth. When in reverse gear position, torque is transmitted through an assembly of the bevel gears.

A marine propulsion system is provided with a drive unit that is attachable to a transom of a marine vessel and provided with steering cylinder assemblies and trimming cylinder assemblies which are connected to a common location on a structural member, such as a gimbal ring. This arrangement improves the geometric relationship between the steering and trimming functions. In addition, the hydraulic steering system is provided with pressure relief valves that are located at the transom of the marine vessel in order to shorten the distance of the hydraulic conduits extending between the pressure relief valves and the steering cylinders.
