Methods, apparatuses, and computer program products for responding to a timeout of a message in a parallel computer are provided. The parallel computer includes a plurality of compute nodes operatively coupled for data communications over one or more data communications networks. Each compute node includes one or more tasks. Embodiments include a first task of a first node sending a message to a second task on a second node. Embodiments also include the first task sending to the second node a command via a parallel operating environment (POE) in response to a timeout of the message. The command instructs the second node to perform a timeout motivated operation.

A hierarchical fanout connectivity infrastructure is built and used to start a parallel application within a parallel computing environment. The connectivity infrastructure is passed to a checkpoint library, which employs the infrastructure and a defined sequence of events, to perform checkpoint, restart and/or migration operations on the parallel application.

Sockets of a computing environment are optimally tuned, even though the environment is dynamic. The tuning is based on information dynamically determined at the time a socket is opened. The information includes, for instance, application specific information and/or socket specific information. Based on the information, one or more parameters of the socket, such as a socket send buffer size and/or a socket receive buffer size, are set to reflect the current configuration of the environment.
