A coupling for routing and distributing exhaust gas flow from an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The coupling includes an upstream duct having a first end and a second end, and a gas flow distribution device arranged between the first and second ends of the upstream duct. The coupling also includes a downstream duct having a first end and a second end, and a flexible portion arranged between the first and second ends of the downstream duct. The upstream duct is fixed to the downstream duct to generate a continuous, sealed passage for the gas flow between the first end of the upstream duct and the second end of the downstream duct. A vehicle is also disclosed having an engine employing an exhaust after-treatment device and the coupling for routing and distributing the gas flow from the engine to the after-treatment device.

Gas flow distributing flexible coupling

An internal combustion engine having an engine body and an acoustic and thermal cover assembly are provided. The engine body includes an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) pipe extending therefrom and the acoustic and thermal cover assembly is positioned adjacent to the engine body. The acoustic and thermal cover assembly includes a first section and a second section extending along the engine body. The assembly further includes an acoustic and thermal shield extending along the first section, a plastic shell extending along the second section, the acoustic and thermal shield and plastic shell forming a cover, and an insulating layer positioned between the cover and the engine body.

A fluid pump includes a housing that defines a suction chamber, a discharge chamber, and a barrier having a first height, wherein the barrier is configured to separate the suction chamber from the discharge chamber. The pump also includes meshed first and second gears rotatably disposed in the housing. The gears are configured to draw relatively low-pressure fluid from the suction chamber, transform the relatively low-pressure fluid into relatively high-pressure fluid, and release the relatively high-pressure fluid into the discharge chamber. The barrier includes first and second portions configured to accept the first and second gears respectively, and a bridge connecting the first and second portions. The bridge is disposed proximately to where the gears mesh and is configured to provide a transition from the first height to a second height to thereby generate gradual re-expansion of the fluid away from the bridge.

Reduced noise fluid pump

A turbocharger compressor includes a compressor housing having a housing wall that includes a shroud that defines a central air channel and a compressor inlet in fluid communication with the central channel and an inlet duct. It also includes a compressor wheel configured to draw air into the compressor inlet from the inlet duct and create a main airflow in the central air channel axially toward a compressor outlet. The compressor also includes a bypass channel that extends between an opening in the main channel located between the compressor inlet and compressor outlet proximate the compressor blades and the compressor inlet. The compressor also includes a deflector that includes a deflector surface that is configured to direct a bypass airflow in the bypass channel, and flowing in a direction from the main channel toward the compressor inlet, into the compressor inlet axially and radially inwardly toward the compressor wheel.

An oil squirter includes a housing in fluid communication with a source of oil pressure, a first nozzle in fluid communication with the housing, and a second nozzle in fluid communication with the housing. The oil squirter also includes a mechanism arranged within the housing and configured to open the first nozzle and close the second nozzle when the oil pressure is below a threshold value. The mechanism is also configured to open the second nozzle and close the first nozzle when the oil pressure is at or above the threshold value. An engine having a cylinder defined by a cylinder bore, a piston configured to reciprocate within the cylinder bore, and the oil squirter, along with a vehicle having such an engine, is also disclosed. In the engine, the first nozzle sprays oil onto the cylinder bore and the second nozzle sprays oil at the underside of the piston.

Oil squirter

An engine assembly may include an engine block, first and second cylinder heads, and a first and second intake manifolds. The engine block may include a first bank defining a first set of cylinders and a second bank defining a second set of cylinders. The first cylinder head may be fixed to the first bank and the second cylinder head may be fixed to the second bank. The first intake manifold may be fixed to the first cylinder head and may include a first acoustic tuning mechanism in communication with the first intake manifold. The second intake manifold may be fixed to the second cylinder head and may include a second acoustic tuning mechanism in communication with the second intake manifold.

A valley shield operable as a noise, fluid, and heat barrier is provided for use with an engine assembly having an engine block with two cylinder banks defining an interbank valley therebetween, and two cylinder heads secured thereto. The valley shield has a unitary body including a base with two laterally spaced side portions extending angularly outward therefrom. The body is configured to pressably fit into place proximate to the valley, between the two cylinder banks, and be secured therein by the cylinder heads. The base is oriented immediately adjacent to the interbank valley and is contoured to define an air pocket therebetween. Each lateral side portion includes a flange extending laterally therefrom to directly engage with the perimeter of the interbank valley, providing an acoustic seal therebetween. The base defines two longitudinally displaced trough portions each defining drain holes and configured to allow for gravitational evacuation of fluid therefrom.

Thermal and acoustic valley shield for engine assembly

An exhaust mounting system includes an exhaust component having a pair of ridges along an outer perimeter. A mounting band is disposed around the outer perimeter of the exhaust component between the ridges. An isolation pad is disposed between the exhaust component and the mounting bracket for absorbing vibration energy between the mounting band and the exhaust component.

An example embodiment of an acoustic treatment for an engine having at least one engine component extending substantially therefrom includes a base layer having a first base surface and an opposing second base surface. The first base surface is configured to mate with an exterior surface of the engine. The example embodiment also includes a secondary layer having a secondary layer mating surface and an opposing secondary layer outer surface. The secondary layer mating surface is configured to mate with the second base surface at a mating interface. The interface provides a pass-through location for the at least one engine component.

Engine acoustic treatment

A control system and method for improving vehicle fuel economy is provided. A base timing module generates a base timing signal. A trim module calculates a vehicle speed compensation factor and generates a timing trim signal based on the vehicle speed compensation factor. A vehicle speed trim module adjusts a calibration parameter (such as engine timing for example) based on the base timing signal and the timing trim signal. According to some implementations, the trim module includes a base trim module and a vehicle speed compensation module. The base trim module generates a base trim signal. The vehicle speed compensation module generates the vehicle speed compensation factor. The base trim signal can be based on a speed of the engine. The base trim signal can further be based on a quantity of fuel delivered to the engine.

Vehicle speed dependant calibration trim for improved fuel economy

A PCV device for recirculation of crankcase air has a structural member with a tubular, substantially linear internal flow passage characterized by a length and diameter with a ratio of length to diameter that attenuates noise and acts as a restrictive orifice to at least partially control flow volume therethrough. A PCV system for an engine includes a structural member as described above placed in fluid communication with a passage member to partially form a flow path between an interior portion of an engine crankcase and an air intake portion of the engine. The flow path has an absence of any flow restriction with a diameter smaller than the diameter of the structural member.

Positive crankcase ventilation device and system

A method for calibrating an engine is provided. The engine includes a cylinder for combustion of a fuel. The method includes setting combustion parameters of the engine, detecting a combustion noise during combustion proximate to the cylinder, detecting an engine sound radiated from the engine during combustion, adjusting the combustion parameters and repeating the steps of detecting a combustion noise and detecting an engine sound. The method further includes generating a relationship between the combustion noises and the engine sounds, determining a combustion noise level that correlates to a predefined engine sound threshold from the relationship, adjusting a speed of the engine and a load on the engine and repeating the previous steps to determine a combustion noise level for each engine speed and engine load setting, and calibrating the engine using the combustion noise levels.

System and method for engine sound calibration

An internal combustion engine includes a crankcase and an upper oil pan. The crankcase includes a plurality of main bearing caps extending between a pair of side walls, with openings in the main bearing caps and in the side walls. The upper oil pan is configured to sealingly engage the crankcase, and includes openings therethrough, which align with the openings in the main bearing caps and the side walls when the upper oil pan engages the crankcase. Fasteners structurally tie the upper oil pan to both the crankcase side walls and the main bearing caps. The engine may further include a lower oil pan defining a sump and attached to the upper oil pan. The upper oil pan preferably includes an oil filter manifold, an oil scraper, and a plurality of oil passages, while also providing a windage tray.
