An inductively coupled plasma (ICP) torch is described that includes a tapered outer end. A system embodiment includes, but is not limited to, a tubular sample injector configured to receive an aerosolized sample in an interior defined by walls of the tubular sample injector; an inner tube surrounding at least a portion of the tubular sample injector to form a first annular space between the inner tube and the walls of the tubular sample injector, the inner tube defining at least one inlet port for introduction of an auxiliary gas into the first annular space; and an outer tube surrounding at least a portion of the inner tube to form a second annular space, the outer tube defining at least one inlet port for introduction of a cooling gas into the second annular space, the outer tube having a flared region at an outlet of the outer tube.

Systems and methods for heating a spray chamber outlet are described. A system embodiment includes, but is not limited to, a conductive body portion defining an aperture to receive a spray chamber outlet; and an internal cartridge heater coupled to the conductive body portion, the internal cartridge heater configured to regulate a temperature of the conductive body portion to inhibit condensate formation within the spray chamber outlet.

A plasma torch assembly (e.g., for an ICP-MS or ICP-AES instrument) with a retractable injector is disclosed. In implementations, the torch assembly includes an injector that can be extended or retracted relative to an auxiliary gas tube of the torch assembly. The injector can be slidably coupled to a torch body that supports the auxiliary gas tube, such that the injector can be moved forward and backward through a passage of the torch body, causing it to extend/retract relative to the auxiliary gas tube.

A peristaltic pump includes a rotating member operably coupled to a drive. The rotating member includes a plurality of rollers arranged in a circular configuration. A guide member defines a channel configured to direct a peristaltic tube around the rotating member so that the peristaltic tube interfaces with the plurality of rollers. The peristaltic tube is pressed against the plurality of rollers by a retaining shoe. The retaining shoe contains surface irregularities configured to restrict movement of the peristaltic tube. A keeper braces the restraining shoe against the peristaltic tube. The rotating rollers compressing the peristaltic tube against the retaining shoe as the rotating member rotates results in a peristaltic action that produces a nearly pulse free linear flow.

A demountable plasma torch assembly suitable for use in ICP spectrometry comprises a first tube having an inner diameter and a second tube disposed concentrically within the first tube, wherein the second tube has an outer diameter that is less than the inner diameter of the first tube. The first and second tubes are supported by a torch body. The torch body includes a first bore configured to receive an end of the first tube, a second bore configured to receive an end of the second tube, and a manifold disposed between the first bore and the second bore to receive a gas for injection between the first tube and the second tube. The manifold has an outer diameter at least substantially equal to the inner diameter of the first tube and an inner diameter at least substantially equal to the outer diameter of the second tube.

A dampening device for an automated sampling/dispensing device is described. In an example implementation, the dampening device includes a cylindrical body. The cylindrical body includes a first end and a second end, a first opening being defined within the first end and a second opening being defined within the second end. Further, the cylindrical body may include an inner diameter greater than an outer diameter of an automated sampling/dispensing device sample probe. During operation, the dampening device moves out of phase with the automated sampling/dispensing device sample probe allowing sample probe vibrations to be dampened during operation. The dampening device is configured to be magnetically attracted to the sampling/dispensing device. For example, the dampening device and/or the sampling/dispensing device can include a permanent magnetic material, a ferromagnetic material, a ferrimagnetic material, and/or an electromagnet.

Automated sampling device

A sample preparation assembly includes a torch configured for use with an inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy instrument. The torch includes at least two approximately cylindrical tubes arranged substantially concentrically. The sample preparation assembly also includes an injector configured for use with the inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy instrument. The injector includes an injection nozzle and a spray chamber. The sample preparation assembly further includes a heat sink element. The heat sink element includes a securing element. The securing element is configured to mate with a mounting element of the torch to mechanically support the heat sink element.

A sample tray assembly includes a first tray. The first tray defines a first slot and is disposed on a generally horizontally-oriented plane. The sample tray assembly also includes a second tray adjacent to the first tray. The second tray is configured for translational movement substantially parallel to the generally horizontally-oriented plane of the first tray between a retracted position and an extended position. The second tray defines a second slot. The second slot and the first slot are substantially aligned when the second tray is in the retracted position. The sample tray additionally includes a base member supporting the first tray. The second tray is slidably coupled with the base member.

Slidable autosampler tray

An enclosure for an automated sampling and/or dispensing device for minimizing contamination to samples enclosed therein. Further, the enclosure may minimize user exposure to the enclosed samples allowing for the containment of potentially hazardous chemicals. In an embodiment, the enclosure includes at least one flexible panel which allows a user to efficiently access the device by retracting the at least one flexible panel. In addition, the at least one flexible panel allows the enclosure to be shipped efficiently for the enclosure may be disassembled into smaller pieces and thus, be shipped in a smaller box when compared to enclosures with non-flexible panels/doors. Moreover, the use of the at least one flexible panel allows the enclosure to be shaped to accommodate varying shaped automated sampling and or dispensing devices and assemblies.

The present invention is directed to an automated sampling and/or dispensing device for minimizing possible sample contamination from contaminants (e.g., mechanical pieces of machinery, dust, or the like) falling into sample vials during analysis by having no mechanical moving parts above stationary samples. The automated sampling or dispensing device may include a table for supporting a sample holder holding a sample vessel, a sample arm assembly extending for supporting a sample probe, the sample arm assembly including a z-axis support and a sample probe support arm, and a drive assembly couple to the z-axis support of the sample arm assembly for powering and positioning the sample arm assembly. The drive assembly causes the sample arm assembly to move in translation along the x-axis, in translation along an axis coaxial with the z-axis support, and radially about the z-axis for inserting the sample probe into the sample vessel.
